Lincoln Park Zoo Lincoln Park Zoo 2019

Visited the zoo today for the first time in years. I was rather impressed with the new additions, as the snow monkey exhibit is excellent and the Polar bear exhibit is above average. I am also excited to see the redevelopment of the lion house ongoing, as it was sad to see animals in those conditions during my last visit.
  • Sadly the puerto rican parrots are temporarily off display today
  • It was snowing out, but surprisingly both species of zebra were on display.
  • Got a few lifers such as the Kagu which was rather active in the bird house.
  • A baby black and white colobus was born last week and is on display in the monkey house.
  • Their was a lot of noise in the lion house that sounded like demolition. Posters were teasing the redevelopment of the building with a large habitat viewed through glass on the North side of the building for the lions. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the interior and south side.
Lastly one thing that struck me about the zoo is wasted potential in regards to the collection. The zoo has a great primate collection for its size, but besides that has relatively few species for the site. Even when there are animals, they feel like placeholders (alpaca, bactrian camel (2 exhibits), peccary). The reptile collection on the website is 28 species, and in person its not much more than that. The mammal collection is rather small as well, except for primates. The bird collection is about 65 species. I hope the zoo focuses more on growing its collection, rather than simply housing megafauna as has been the recent trend.
What they really need to do is start doing is mixed species in there hoofyards and it seems like are going with all smaller species of primates would be great if they could bring back orangutans and man drills I know Lincoln park zoo is limited on space but if they did bring back orangutans they could put the Gibbons with them

I received the zoo's 2019 annual report in the mail today. They featured what will be included in the Kovler Lion House renovations:

  • Space for a pride of lions in an expansive, savannah-style habitat
  • Kopje-inspired rockwork to increase both horizontal and vertical space available to lions, so they can enjoy a high perspective and plenty of surface area to rest comfortably
  • Climate-controlled areas with heated rock surfaces, hot and cool air, and shade
  • Corners, slopes, and landscaping for privacy
  • Whole trees and deadfall made from FSC-certified products to iinvite lions to climb and play
  • A food zipline to mobilize enrichment for lions to stalk and chase "prey"
  • Nose-to-nose indoor and outdoor viewing windows for zoo guests
  • A special pathway so guests can view the environment from the lions' perspective
  • Interpretive signs introducing guests to the lions and the zoo's lion conservation efforts, and inspiring people to contemplate wildlife's future
  • An advanced holding facility with a cubbing den and indoor animal management area so lions can further participate in their own care
  • Accessible facilities and restrooms
  • A coffee shop and public gathering space

The zoo now has free admission until Dec 31, 2049.

Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo to remain free until mid-century

This is pretty good news, seeing how i'm dying to visit either this, Field Museum, or Shedd Aquarium, since my family is going to Chicago for a week to visit my relatives. I'm honestly not going to do Brookfield if only to avoid Tropic World, and I am not going within a decimetre of Phillips Park Zoo (even though its the closest zoo from said relatives). Though, like the rest of us, I would try to do all three in an ideal world.

Shedd is easily the best of Chicago's zoos, though I would place Brookfield ahead of Lincoln Park.

Just got back from a trip with my mom. I definitely think this is one of if not the best zoo I've been to, with African Journey, the Regenstein Center for African Apes, and the McCormick Bird House being my favourite exhibits. I'll be uploading pictures soon and into tomorrow.

Updates from my visit yesterday:

  • Saw the Puerto Rican Parrots for the first time.
  • The Cactus Mice and stick insects were the most fun animals to watch.
  • The baby rhino is so cute!
  • The McCormick Bird House was closed. No reason was given, but several vans were parked outside the building labeled "electrical repair".

How many (sex and age) Puerto Rican parrot do they exhibit?

I visited the zoo last Monday and was very disappointed that most of the zoo was closed off including African Journey, the great apes, the polar bears, the rhinos, and McCormick bird house. Combined with the empty lion house, and several no-show animals, I really only was able to visit the macaques, zebras, takin, old primate house, duck pond and reptile/small mammal house.

McCormick bird house is still closed? Do you know if this was a one-off thing or if it has been continually closed since August?

I could not tell if it were closed specifically but there were gates blocking off the path toward that whole side of the zoo

The zoo recently received a $15 million donation towards the $40 million Kovler Lion House project. Towards the end of the article there is also mention of $100,000 being donated to a lion conservation fund. The number of large-scale projects at Lincoln Park Zoo during the past decade (polar bears, penguins, macaques, visitor center, lions) must make nearby Brookfield Zoo green with envy. :D

Outdated Lincoln Park Zoo lion house to be modernized and renamed after $15 million donation
