Their website still says the exhibits are closed. Just to clarify, you’re able to confirm this?

He’s looking at the Guam rail in the aviary. The aviary is open. Birds famously make tweeting noises. A tweet is also a way to make an online announcement. I suggested that the rail, the same bird that confirmed the aviary’s opening, had done so via tweet. This is humorous because birds cannot use Twitter but do ‘tweet’ nonetheless.

Yes, can confirm, was in there a few hours ago. Volunteer said it reopened at the beginning of the week. Penguins, flamingoes and waterfowl still off display understandably (though they weren't of especial rarity interest to me).

Worth going before the penguins reopen, for anyone in local area, as the Inca terns are currently in the tropical walk through in the bird house, where they look very incongruous and funny.

Wait, did you think the terns were normally kept with the penguins? I don’t blame you for thinking that, but NOPE! The tropical walk-through is their permanent home, for whatever reason (they were there in August last year, can confirm)!

Really?!? Haha, I just assumed! I've never seem such a thing before!

Was the Children's Zoo open?

Keeping Inca Terns in tropical aviaries is very common in American zoos.

Children's Zoo is still closed until the end of the Black-Crowned Night Heron nesting season. The African Penguins have started having periodic access to the exhibit as I saw several yesterday. Birds of Prey are on habitat along with Ostrich at Camel/Zebra. McCormick Bird House is fully reopened. Waterfowl/Flamingo are still off-exhibit. Confirmed by staff member (me) :p

Children's zoo closed but since I had my binoculars, got some pretty good views of the red wolves, whilst looking at the herons and their nests.

Is the Children's Zoo closed for bird flu-related reasons then, or just to reduce disturbance to the herons?

More for less disturbance of the herons! It usually at least partially closes yearly when they show up. I believe we reached about 400+ individuals this year nesting

Anyone know what this was about? I'm just curious and don't actually think there were animal welfare issues. I'm sure the PB was just rolling around in ice

Comments from my 6/25/2022 visit:
I saw the herons, they are thick in there and it is understandable why the Children's Zoo was closed. The Bird House was indeed open and wonderful as always. As stated before, the waterfowl in the ponds (Not in the buildings) and flamingos are still off-exhibit, but otherwise the other birds were on show.

Updates from my visit today:

  • I saw the Pepper Family Wildlife Center for the first time today, and wow, that's am impressive Lion exhibit!
  • I finally saw the aviary after years of misses!
  • Sadly, there are no longer orbweavers in Regenstien African Journey.
  • The Children's Zoo has re-opened, however the building remains closed. I took a peek through the windows and it appears that most, if not all, of the animals and exhibits have been removed. A huge loss, that building was one of my favorites in the zoo.
  • Luckily, the walkingsticks from the Children's Zoo have been moved into the Small Mammal-Reptile House. That was one of my favorite species in the Children's Zoo.
  • The rhinos are off-exhibit and will be until August 16.
  • The Axolotls and ASCOs appear to be gone.

This a huge shame, the Orbweavers were always my favorite part of the exhibit. I guess their former enclosure will remain empty until further notice?

Same goes for the Axolotls. They'll be missed dearly so.

Is there any possibility, even remote, that the building is only being gutted temporarily and some species may return? Very worrying news.

Perhaps - I have no idea what the plans for the Children's Zoo area is.

What enclosure? They just lived in a corner in the ceiling, basically.
