Made my monthly visit today!

- The McCormick Bird House was signed in both doors as temporarily closed today.
- Pied Tamarin, North American River Otter, and Golden Orb Spider were all signed "this animal is temporarily off display".
- The bachelor gorilla troop was also signed as "temporarily off-display" late in the afternoon; however they are often taken off display late in the afternoon so this was probably just for the day.

The lion family was all out today at once mostly using the heated rocks in their enclosure and chewing on some bones. Jabari tried to mate with one of the females but she swatted him away and he went to the other end of the enclosure in the grass, vocalized and laid down. The oldest cub is two now and his siblings are one; the oldest has the start of a mane, which looks like a mohawk, and the young still have fuzzier cub fur despite their bigger size. I'm told the cub that had mobility issues is doing really well and if he was correctly identified today he seemed very active. A docent clarified to multiple guests that the cubs will probably remain as long as the family continues to get along; Jabari is known to be a good, gentle father so there isn't an immediate concern to send them away.

Finally, just for a personal note, I had the pleasure to finally see Patsy aardvark active and digging in her enclosure in front of the giraffes! Visiting African Journey ten minutes before it closed, when it still starts to get dark after four o'clock was very rewarding for this. She attracted a lot of attention from guests, too. Highlight of my visit.

The zoo posted on social media that African lion cub Lomelok will be undergoing surgery for a spinal issue.

Glad to hear about Lomelok. He was the same cub I referred to in the previous post but forgot his name.

In Regenstein Center for African Apes, the bachelor and family gorilla troops have recently swapped habitats again. The family troop is in the first habitat (with the moated yard) and the bachelors in the second/middle dayroom.

On March 28th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) western lowland gorilla named Bana passed away on March 26th at age 29 due to an abrupt decline in health following diagnosis of congestive cardiac failure and bronchopneumonia the weeks prior.

The McCormick Bird House was closed today. Lots of supplies and what looked like cleaning materials near the entrance, I'm not sure how long this is for.

Finally saw the Beavers out, one was quite active swimming up to the glass and splashing about. Never seen Beaver before.

In other news, the night heron rookery has blocked off the childrens zoo apart from the childrens zoo apart from the main building. Has been occurring yearly but hasn't been mentioned in the thread yet.

On June 3rd, the zoo announced that Lomelok passed away due to a gastrointestinal obstruction that would have required another surgery and a long recovery in isolation.

Such a heartbreaking loss. Locals have been following Lomelok's journey closely on social media and there was a lot of optimism about his future especially when he and his brothers reunited. Shame.

Bana died back on March 26th, and @Smaggledagle reported this on March 28th.
