Just wondering if any of you UK guys have been to the Linton zoo, I was looking at their website and they seem to have a good collection for a smaller zoo, they also seem to be breeding some of their animals quite well, there are some nice pics of a Hornbill chick Jono.

They've done very well with breeding brazilian tapirs, according to their site. One female has had over seven births!!

They've also got Hartmann's mountain zebra. A very rare species in British zoos...

Its a little zoo in Cambridgeshire- I went once but it is pretty small. There's a Tiger enclosure, a couple of enclosures for leopards, a lot of bird aviaries, a paddock and stables for the Zebras(at that time they had Grevy's) the Brazilian Tapir enclosure- I can't remember much else.

I have been to this zoo. It's not great but there are some okay bits. I know they make a big thing of their tapirs, they're very hands on with them and they do (or did) daily displays with them.

The leopard enclosures are not very impressive really, not a lot more than big wooden cages, but the open topped tiger enclosure is quite good. Its the only place I can remember seeing snow leopards, I have seen them at thrigby hall too, but I was too young to remember it now.

It's also the only place I've ever seen binturong too as far as I can remember, though whether they are still there I don't know.

There were some good aviaries, including a nice wetland aviary with plovers and ibis etc. I also remember guanaco, and donkeys etc.

As pertinax says its a very small collection, with lots of common species filling the gaps between the more unusual gems.

Banham Zoo.

Just 'up the road' from Linton is another 'small' zoo- Banham in Norfolk- but this is actually a much bigger collection and its nicely set out too. Its owned by the same farmer who owns 'Africa Alive' in Suffolk (formerly the Suffolk Wildlife Park) but in my opinion Banham is the more interesting collection- though it lacks the large ungulates of Suffolk W.P.

I'm not going to list absolutely everything- you can look on Banham Zoo's website for that, but they do have(or have had) such species as; Snow Leopards, Sri Lankan Leopards, Cheetah, Siberian Tiger, Grevy Zebra, Camels, Pudu, Maned Wolf, Binturong, Fur Seal, Muellers Gibbon, large collection of South American monkeys, marmosets and tamarins, Colobus, Lemurs etc, Red Panda, Otters, deer/llamas-a good bird collection including a very comprehensive collection of Amazon Parrots, a falconry centre, rare breeds farm etc.

Its also laid out in an attractive setting, with trees and hedges and with animal exhibits seemingly around every corner and with some good modern enclosures. For families with children, its a relatively small area easy to get around but there's even a little train as well in case you get tired.

Banham certainly gets my vote on several levels and is worth a visit.... my only grouse?- they let their small group of precious Hamlyn's monkeys die out...
