lion enclousre

hi we are in the process of adding a lion to our collection can any one advise on the height the enclousre fence should be we live in an area in england where the local law has never had an application to keep a lion before, also would like to know the minimum required enclousre space for a lion.

A lion? just the one?
Could you share some information about your facility, it may help us help you.

we own just a small private reserve, this lion was bought as a cub and now its got too big the owners cant cope, local zoo's have been very un helpful hence us housing it and if all goes well we can add a friend in the near future.

Ok, i dont know the standards for keeping lions in the UK. so hopefully someone will eb able to help out, it may be worth you contacting or visiting some larger zoo's, as you will need holding facilities aswell.

we already have the building suitable for the holding area, and our local safari park just keep there lions behind 4' electric fence with a perimeter fence of sheep netting about 6'..... is that usual? if we are to go down the route of taking on lions i want the most relastic enviorment for them to live in so i dont really want concrete walls a chain link fencing!! have you ever seen a lion enclousre that looks good but at the same time secure?

At the zoo I work at our Lions are kept behind a 4m (or close to it) weldmesh fence with a 1m 45degree angle over hang.
Every wall of our lion yards is done like this, with short tunnels into the night house.
Keeps then in, and allows the public to see them closely, there is 1.5m stand off barrier to keep the public away from the lion fence.

thanks for that its useful my zoo director has just said westmidlands safari parks perimeter to the lions enclourse is about that but there over hang is just electric. what sort of size is the enclousure where you work? and how many lions does it hold?

I dont have sizes with me here, but will ge the figures for you later in the week, one yard holds two males and the other with an internal holding yard, hold 4 females.

Hi there, whats the name of your park? I live in Walsall, a visit would be great, (hint) what other animals do you have?

Hi there i dont know how tall but all the newer enclosures the fencing is getting a bit taller i think between 4/6 meters with an overhang of about 1 foot is about it.Would be great to know which park it is.I also know where there are some lion cubs at the moment all of about 4 or so months old which will be moving in the next year or so and all 3, 2 males and 1 female are doing great :) .So they could be suitable.
Great to hear on more news and also where the lion is coming from although you might not be able to tell us so dont worry if you cant :)
James

Thanks HH-Wildlife Park i would love to visit when/if you do open. Are you able to say what other species the park holds?

we only have the usual meerkats, wallabies, capuchin monkeys, porcupine, and zebra. we did have a red panda but lost him too old age. as too where the lion is coming from we cannot disclose at present however he is coming from outside the eu which we hope willl give us a good blood line to add to the growing ledgend but we have already been let down twice.

4 meters is the average fence height in New Zealand ours is 5.5 meters that was the standard at the time we built it a few years ago.
