Yorkshire Wildlife Park Lion Rescue (Yorkshire Wildlife Park)

Lion Rescue

I read on the internet that this project is definately going ahead even though not quite all the money has been raised and it will take place in January, don't know the exact date.

Lion Enclosure making excellent progress

I was at YWP last weekend and the progress that has been made is absolutely astonishing, the photos on the animal directors private Facebook page show the indoor enclosure practically built and the 10 acre enclosure coming along nicely.

With now less than one week until the lions touch down in Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, I wish them the very best of luck with all the remaining plans and I will be present when the Lions are officially released for the public to see.

Lion Rescue

:)Tomorrow is the big day for the lions ( 11th Feb ) does anybody know the timing of their journey when they leave and when they touch down in England etc?

They leave the zoo tomorrow and will go by road to Budapest Airport. They are expected at YWP on Friday 12th Feb.

I wonder how many of the lions will arrive in the UK . Seem to remember when this story first broke there was a statement that some of the lions could be too old and unhealthy to travel - certainly if some are aged in their twenties which is very old .

13 are making the trip

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park launched its new website today. I have to say it looks a lot better than the old one and a lot more sophisticated, like a wildlife park that knows what they are doing. The Lions have already been moved to budapest and are expected to land in Doncaster sometime later today.

The regional news program Look North has just reported live from the park. They have now been transfered from the airport but only one has left his or her crate so far. I expect the poor things are a bit overwhelmed by the journey and all the fuss.

I feel so much for these lions, rescued from that awful hell-hole. Now they stand a chance to live out the rest of their lives under reasonable conditions in England. I am so glad for that!

Please keep us posted on every detail, Stripes!

Yes please do Stripes!;)

Poor lions its great that these animals are moving to this new facility which will be a massaive improvement!

I'd hardly heard of this place until I read this. It sounds like a small but curious zoo.

I think they did the right thing and I'd be very intrested as to how these lions get on. I wish them all the best!

Update from YWP website

The lions arrived at YWP on Thursday afternoon and by the early hours of the morning they were finally in the Lion House. Today the lions are very tired after the long journey but are bright and seem settled in their new surroundings. The house is now a quarantine area so only authorised staff may go in to look after the lions and of course, the vets who will be making regular visits to check on their health and welfare. The lions are in three groups in the house: in the first section are the lionesses Frida, Crystal, Julie and Carla with the 10 year old male, Johnny Junior. Carla was one of the liveliest during the journey to the park and during the road journey from Oradea to Budapest had to be given an extra sedative to keep her settled. She also featured in TV coverage yesterday as the lioness that didnt want to come out of the crate! After two hours of Carla deciding that she wasnt brave enough to be the first into the new house, her crate was closed and moved out of the way and the rest of the group were unloaded before her. There was no hanging around for Johnny Junior or Cezar they went straight in! These five lions were soon cuddled up together in their warm straw bed and went to sleep as if nothing had happened.

In the second section are juvenile 18 month old Ares and Adel along with their mother Alis and Cezar. Ares and Adel were fascinated by the thick blanket of wood shavings on the floor of their new home and both rolled happily in them a bit like puppies do when they first see snow! It was a change from the bare concrete floor back in Romania.

Last but not least, Maria was pleased to be reunited with her cubs Simba and Dan and the last lion to be unloaded was 27 year old Johnny Senior, who was very tired but had survived the additional stress that the sedation and journey had on this very elderly lion.

All 13 lions that had left Oradea Zoo 24 hours previously had arrived safely in the UK for the long programme of veterinary care and rehabilitation that lies ahead before they are introduced to their 9 acre reserve which is being prepared.
