Mogo Wildlife Park Lion shot at Mogo Zoo

Sounds like the staff there did what they had to. my sympathies for the owner and staff.

My sympathies for the dead lioness.

Mine too!

If it was human error, someone should get their backside smacked for this! It's the last sort of publicity that zoos need, specially good small zoos like Mogo.

It is human to make a mistake. I think that whoever is taking responsability for this. Is already feeling remoursefull and wishes it never happened.

This sort of publicity is not necesarily bad at all. Steve Erwins stock went up after the baby and feeding the croc situation.

So any publicity is good publicity, eh?

Apparently the zoo has already begun receiving hate mail over the shooting.

No thats actually not what l said, eh!;)

Curious as to your comment on hate mail. Do you have this information directly from the zoo? Or are you starting or buying into the hysteria that could be easily created around this. When comments are made that are not based on fact.

It is my fervent hope that the spineless armchair experts who have sent hate mail to Mogo watched the interview with Sally Padey on "Sunrise" this morning.

They may have caught a glimpse of the enormous torment that Mrs Padey is enduring as a result of the awful events of the last couple of days.

If these anonymous zealots were true animal lovers they would be offering her support right now - not the toxic effluent of their poisonous minds.

Steve, did Sally Padey mention the hate mail?

Its a shame, a couple of people sending emails will get so much attention.

It is very sad and I feel for Sally and the zoo. Sally obviously loves all her animals, it seems especially for her lions. I believe this lioness was hand raised by sally and was in one of Greg Grainger's Documentaries. Very Beautiful girl and that would have been an incredibly difficult decision for sally to make.

Maybe people here might want to send a email of support to Sally, as l have done.

What did the people writing the hate mail want. There were human lives at stake here and I really don't see how any blame could be placed on Sally or her staff. Sure it is sad that they had to shoot the lioness, definately it would have been better that some other solution could have been attained but I think that they did what they had to. To Ara and Snow leopard would you rather that they had let the lion continue and possibly injure someone. So yes sympathies for the lioness but I don't see what else could be done.
As for bad publicity, I don't see how it could reflect badly on them. The zoo had procedures in place in case something like this happened. The procedures worked, the staff kept their cool.

The procedures were followed. as Sally said in the paper she thought with her head not her heart. For those that are interested here is the interview with sally.

Yahoo!

I hope this doesn't bring up the same response that the closure of Mareeba did. That prompted calls for the closing of private zoos and and not allowing private individuals to be licenced. I don't think people realise just how many animals are in private zoos and wildlife parks. Mogo should be congratulated on it's prompt, efficient repsonse. Was only a couple of years ago a lion got out of it's enclosure at Mareeba. the animal was returned to the enclosure and Mr Husband recieved alot of positive attention. However at the time the zoo was NOT open to the public, the lion was younger. I'd be willing to bet that they had a gun ready also.

jay, I think that it will give the AR people an opportunity to vent their spleen so it will be bad publicity from that point of view. [Anything that gives that mob a free kick has to be bad publicity!].

But professionals, and the zoo going public, will appreciate the way that the Mogo management and staff dealt with a potentially dangerous situation. You're quite right - the procedures worked and worked well.

Already some State regulators have demanded safety audits by their zoos holding large carnivores, just as they did with primates following the attack by the "pet" chimp in the US recently.

Someone said to me why didn't they tranqualise the animal, especially as all the visitors were is 'safe' houses. I think Sally responded well to that question but it got me thinking about the safe houses. Knowing the layout of the zoo I'm assuming that people were herded into the main entrance/gift shop building which could be closed up to prevent entry by the animal. But what if you were down at the monkey lakes. That is a fair way away from any buildings that visitors could have access to. The risk that someone could be down there, unknown to the staff and if the lioness had gotten down there...
When the rhino escaped at Monarto they were prepared to shoot it if it got through the fence, this was seen by everyone as sensible.

i think mogo did the right thing given the circumstances; that includes the leglislation surrounding zoos and the safety of the public.
it is sad that the lion had to be shot but ultimately it was the right decision at the time under what must have been very stressful circumstances
