Lions N My Hood

Two weeks ago I was concerned about 3 mountain lions prowling my neighborhood, but just this past Tuesday night, close to midnight, I had returned from dropping my youngest son off to work his graveyard shift. I was about to bring in the second of two trash cans when I noticed 3 coyotes swiftly making their way up the cross street; my home sits second from the corner. While one stopped at the corner home across the street, the other 2 crossed to my side of the street and stood there staring at me. Within seconds, they came charging straight at me! Knowing not to run from any wild animal at such close range, I stood my ground and began stomping my right foot, all the while shouting "get!" "get!" This apparently foiled their plans, causing them to dart passed me, cross the street, then back the direction of the 3rd coyote still standing on the corner home's lawn across the street. Then, silently, they all 3 made their way swiftly up the cross street, and I assume into the hills behind the next block over. Was I afraid? Well lets just say that I quickly made my way to the front door, keys fumbling in my hand! And the two that charged me weren't the average scrawny specimens usually seen while driving down the street late at night or early mornings while headed to work. But robust; I'd guess approximately 50 pounds each. My guess, judging by the size of my 45 pound border collie. All the documentary and literature advice about standing your ground paid off for me.

I have seen a coyote at dusk near my downtown (Tucson) condo and on the street bordering the UofA (in the middle of town). A photographer friend who lives on the west side of town (in the Tucson mountains) had a mountain lion on his roof recently. And of course we continue to get camera trap photos (but no personal encounters) of a jaguar in the Santa Rita mountains, which border the south and east side of Tucson.
