Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa Lisbon Zoo

A male white rhino has been born at Lisbon Zoo on the 7th of December.

Its the first baby born of this spp at the Zoo and all is OK with the baby (male) and with the mother.

LZ currently has 2.2 adult white rhinos. I dont know who are the parents, only that the father is 24years old and the mother 9 years old.

The other female is also pregnant and due in two months.]

Excellent news. As far as I can recollect the first white rhinos to be born in Zoo da Lisboa ... The male is Tumkombe (b. 1986). Both females were born ca. 2002 on a game farm in S.Africa.

Baby tigers at Lisbon Zoo

3 white tiger cubs have been born at Lisbon Zoo. two males and one females

There was a baby born gorilla but the baby didn't make it. I don't know why but it was a big shock for the mother, even after the baby died she still carried him for a few days.

Yes, Nazibu is still gaining the females respect because he is still young but things are going well and i´m sure it will happen again.

Do you know if he mates with either of the other females, or just with Anguka?

Any other details on the baby's cause of death, or was it stillbirth?

Very encouraging that Nasibu is now definately proven though...:)

He mates and play with Anguka and Bak, but with Ulca he try, but she still do not respect him. He wants to play with her and likes to provoque her, but she do not wants to play with him

Thankyou for this information. Do you think 'Bak' is still of breeding age? Is there any plan to add any more females in this group?

Hello again,

Bak is younger than Ulca, she had an abortion with Cuco years ago, we hope this time she have more luck. About more females in this group I think not, but if we have babies who knows. I think Nasibu will be a very good male (when he knows how to behave like one), he likes very much Anguka and he never gives up Ulca, although she do not wants to be submissive to him. He likes to provoke her to play his favourite play: run inside the enclosures being "chase" by her. :)

That is a classic young Silverback game, where he teases the female until she gets angry and chases him off.;)

I am very interested in how it goes with Nasibu because I knew his maternal grandparents, Samson & Delilah at Bristol Zoo, and also his mother 'Naomi' and her brother 'Daniel'. In photos I have seen 'Nasibu' looks very similar to 'Daniel' . I am pleased to hear he is now a proven breeder and hope things go better next time.

Can you say why Anguka's baby did not survive?

Hello again,

Thanks you for your answer. About Anguka's baby we do not know, the results were inconclusive, but the behavior with the baby, was very good, they all protect the baby, maybe next time they have better luck.

Fantastic day (9 hours or so) spent by myself and robmv at Lisbon today.

Loved the cable car - especially the random extra species at the Felids Hill (Serval, Fishing Cat) and the very top of the zoo. Saw two species of camel, Nyala, Greater Kudu and Wapiti, as well as a random Red Fox - has anyone ever managed to see the porcupines or Iberian Wolves from the cable car? Have to say the cable car was great.

The half screened-off building near the Reptile House with Japanese Macaque, Moustached Guenon, Brown Capuchin and Green Monkey - has this been on show recently? Has it always been a monkey house?

Overall enjoyed the zoo enormously - so much more there than shown on the map!

The Black-faced Impala and Gemsbok paddocks were resurfaced today - the Impalas were shut in until 3ish as a result but the work in the Gemsbok paddock went on with them watching!

Photos will follow in a week or so!

To answer my own question, after checking some old maps we found this was built as the 'Chimpanzee Palace'.

Exactly.

Until the built of the Primate Temple (where Orang, Gorilla and Chimp resides) the Chimps resided at that enclosure.

Now it serves as a temporary offshow exibit for those primates.

Im sure that soon it will be completly remodelated or destroyed.
