Toronto Zoo List of species at Toronto

I started work in the North American Pavilion just after the official opening and I can remember quite a few species! Putting the tapirs in with the Capy’s would have worked, but they would have walked out of the exhibit, the barrier was fall too low. I put together the plans to have the Llama house set up for Rheas, a species we hadn’t exhibited since we had them with Alpacas back in ’74-75 and only one of the original pair.

Some Animals of the Past

Hey guys, it's great to see some fellow TZ- lovers!

I now live in Shanghai, and haven't been to my old home zoo in a while, but I remember some species that were on briefly for a period of time that aren't on the list
1. At some point, there was a pair of Green Magpies free-flying in the indoor Indian Rhino exhibit
2. Domestic rabbits, ferrets, goats, pigs, bobwhite quail and groundhogs in the Kid's Zoo
3. There was a kind of orb-weaver spider that is in the new tree shrew habitat. Another (maybe the same one) in the Blue-winged Grasshopper exhibit in Americas
4. Black crake and some kind of buttonquail in the mousebird exhibit in Africa
5. There was at one point a river stingray in Americas
6. Used to be Major Mitchell's Cockatoos and Rainbow Lorikeets in Australia, where the new marsupial habitat is now
6. A roller and some kind of magpie in Malayan Woods

And does anyone know what happened to the nocturnal house in Australia? That used to be one of my favorite areas, but I didn't see it last time I went- is it gone for good or are they bringing it back later?

THe nocturnal house was converted several years back into the great barrier reef exhibits. I liked the Edge of the Night too. It always seemed like the animals in there were some of the most active creatures at the zoo. Its too bad they couldnt have just kept Edge of the Night and built on a wing for the great barrier reef but Im guessing for countless reasons that wasnt practical (space and expense being the biggest reasons). Maybe at some point there will be space in some other pavilion that they will dedicate to nocturnal animals.

Sadly the only species you mentioned that are still at the zoo are the domestics in the kid's zoo and the black crake.
