Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust lizards

Another reptilian endeavour for Jersey Zoo. I sincerely hope that their involvement will be able to promote reptile recovery ex situ as well as inside Mauritius. The part of the programme whereby training opportunities for local Mauritian herpetologists is being investigated is most promising. Reptile rapid captive-breeding projects have increasingly shown how production on-line in captivity can be significantly and dramatically increased. For an critically endangered taxon of just 350 individuals rapid increase in numbers is crucial to maintaining population and securing its long-term viability. I look also forward to any predator eradication programmes for rats, cats, goats and pigs that have also damaged the Mascarenes for ages.

Interestingly, you guys may be interested that a species reintroduction is already in place on the Mascarenes with Aldabran and radiated tortoises being released on some of the islands to replicate the role the extinct Mascarene giant tortoises had in the local ecosystem ... :D
