Local Stereotypes

Growing up in Michigan, whenever I meet someone from outside of Michigan they always assume that I live in Detroit or an urban environment which isn't the case. I figured this would be a spot for people to post what they think of when they here about any specific place, and then the zoochatters from that area can clear up whether that stereotype is fact or fiction. I was thinking we could start off with Michigan, so ask away!

So you live beside a fast-flowing river?

:p

Hix

@Hix: Nope, but there is a creek less than a quarter mile away that will be a gusher come the spring thaw! Most people in Michigan though are quite connected to water, and the furthest you can be from some sort of natural water source in Michigan is around three miles.

Everyone in Michigan worked for a car manufacturer, but is now unemployed. ;)

One of my favourite TV shows is a reality show about a pawn shop in Detroit. That show represents my impression of Michigan.

I have always found it funny the whole view of Michigan as car factories and inner city Detroit, when we have more than 19 million acres of forest.

To shake it up what are some Australian stereotypes?

I have always imagine that the animals you find kangaroos on the golf courses from watching TV. :)

This is where I get my stereotypes of Michigan from.

Anyway.... hmmm. I think that there is a perception that Australia is all sun kissed beaches, and warm all-year round. The truth is that Australia has snow in winter on the mountains, the interior is mostly desert, and in southern areas (like Melbourne) the temperature is quite mild.

There is also a stereotype that Australia is a small island. Like the folks who went to Adelaide on conference and thought they could do a return trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock) in a day. (Uluru is actually more than 1,500km away.) Australia is about the same size as the lower 48 states of America. This should give you a rough idea of the size of Australia: Google Image Result for http://www.personally-selected-aboriginal-art.com/images/2.21-Australia-over-the-wor.jpg

There are lots of kangaroos in Australia, sometimes quite close to the big cities.

So nanoboy, do you grill shrimp on the barbie?;)

I'm kind of tired of everyone lumping Puerto Rico and Mexico as one place (not you guys, just people in general)

Why do I get the feeling that this thread will soon become another racial battlefield?

In that case, stay away from my sheep.:D

You're thinking of the Welsh.

(with apologies to all my many Welsh friends - but I couldn't resist!)

I'm from Alabama lets not start with the stereotypes here haha. I believe it was Michigan's governor Granholm who said "they don't build anything in Alabama". We build Mercedes, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Siemens, Thyssen Krupt, Golden Dragon Copper, Carpenter Technology, Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed, and oh yeah the rockets that took humans to the moon and the space shuttle.

But yeah y'all know about my guns so haha jokes on me. But I do have all my teeth, a Master's degree, I'm not a racist, and I am not married to a relative.

But you do say words like y'all.

Technically the Germans built the rocket that took us to the moon.

I know I do. I'm a 25 year old high school teacher living back on the farm (cattle goats vineyards and pulpwood) after college.

Where did Von Braun build it? Better yet where did he live most of his life? :):)

On my trip to Florida, I met some people who thought I lived in the Arctic and only spoke French (which is weird because I was speaking to them in English).
And just so you guys know, I have never said "eh" in my life.

I tend to think of Canadians as either from Quebec (aka French *******s) or basically honorary Americans (those I've met through the Natural Gas industry from Alberta and the like)

Now I wanna make a joke about Canadian mounties...

From the wildlife in your city thread - I imagine Australia is one part Jurassic Park (there are things on this island that not only can kill you but want to kill you if you take it lightly you will never leave it) and another part America's mirror twin.

Are we discussing geographic stereotypes, or stereotypes in general?

I'll try to stick to geographic stereotypes after I address Thylo's shrimp comment. Yeah, I do throw a shrimp on the barbie off and on, but funnily enough, we call them prawns, not shrimp.

I think that a lot people believe that Australia is all desert, but they don't realise that up north we have tropical rainforests too! The monsoon is usually associated with India and Bangladesh, but Australia has the monsoon as well in the 'Top End'.
