Lodz Zoo Lodz Zoo news

View attachment 829680 New arrivals:
- 1 Somali Sheep from Zoo Leśne Zacisze
- 1 male Great Argus
- 1 female Blyth's Hornbill from Lisbon
Both birds currently lives in the same exhibit, just next to aviary with female argus and male hornbill
- 1 Prévost's Squirrel, this time female I guess
- small group of Hanging parrots, additionally 3 males are expected to arrive.
Not 100% sure if this is Loriculus Galgulus, or or something else. They are in Orientarium, in Sunda zone. Like Bali Mynahs before, they are in temporary, covered small aviary. Their final place will be aviary which I wrote about last time. No walk-through aviary, just a regular aviary for parrots AND for Palawan Porcupines. Part for porcupines is already up. About porcupines, this is return of this species to Orientarium after almost 3 years.

As addition to this information, Bali Mynahs finally free-roaming in this zone. They are very active, curious, and not timid. I've been waiting for this, since the first days of the opening of this pavilion.
Also male Red-cheeked gibbon from Kosice should arrive in some time.

Deaths:
- Giant Otter - male Cashibo

Miscellaneous:
More detailed information in english, about 3 future zoo projects:
Elemental Pavilion – main attraction of the new zoo in Łódź - Orientarium Łódź
Rhinoceros Pavilion and Southeast Asia Forest Zone - Orientarium Łódź
Savanna – African breeding and exhibition complex - Orientarium Łódź

I think that underground zoo in some way evolved to House of Elements. In description of this project there is a mention about "underground zone".
Shame about them using AI for the concept art, with the concepts themselves being otherwise quite unique!

I was about to say, the developments seem very nice and promising, but the use of AI leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Looks very promising. Very glad to read that there will be another holder for banteng, drill and bonobo.

Do you know where in the garden the Elemental Pavilion will be built: probably somewhere in the present Monkeyhouse-SouthAmericaHouse area?

Not 100% sure, but I marked it on the map. Maybe the area with the eagle aviary can also be included in this project.

Births:
- 7 Matamata tortoises

In my opinion, one of the TOP births in Zoo Lodz in last few years. After many, many years finally a success with this species. Hatchlings are already on display in Vivarium.
Additionally, a few eggs are still in incubator.

Recent FB reel mentions that those 7 matamata hatchlings just moved to other Polish zoos (no names). But meanwhile another 4 babies hatched and 20 new eggs are still in incubator. It also mentions that Lodz received their first ever matamata (a male) from Bronx zoo 30 years ago and he is base of their breeding.

Are these kept behind the scenes? I remember form my visit last year that I only saw 1 specimen in the enclosure in the Reptile House (with a Withe-rumped Shama).

Sometimes I saw both specimens, sometimes 1, and sometimes 0. Sometimes one of the specimens is on far left side of small land zone.
-----------------------------------
Like the last time, some new things, observations based on the last visit, but mostly this time news from local news sites and etc.

Arrivals:
- 1 Masked Lapwing - male from Stuttgart
- 1 Grey-legged night monkey - in Night House after quarantine(exhibit together with mouse-deer I guess?)
- 12 Tricolored parrotfinches - After quarantine mixed exhibit with Palawan Porcupines and Hanging Parrots.
- Himalayan monal - 1 male and 2 females from Amsterdam. Now zoo has 2 pairs.
- 5 young Julio's casquehead iguanas - off-show for now.
- 2 Pygmy Goats - females from Leśne Zacisze
- 1 Persian fallow deer female
- 1 Southern Cassowary - male from Warsaw

Some additions to my previous posts:
- male Great Argus is from Arnhem
- female Demoiselle Crane is from Neunkirchen
- female Prévost's Squirrel is from France
- 4 Waldrapp ibises - new specimens, not hatchlings from this year. I wasn't sure about that last time.

Departures:
- 1 Masked Lapwing female ---> Wrocław

Births:
- 1 Lyle's flying fox
- Giant Hooded Katydids - One of the fresh hatchlings somehow escape from his enclosure(for adult specimens) and I was able to catch and secure him before zookeepers arrived. That was a surprise for zookeepers.

Deaths:
- young Persian fallow deer and young Red Panda
