ZSL London Zoo London 2012

London Zoo's new developments are currently following a masterplan that was drawn up in 2002 by Terry Farrell & Partners architects, well before the 2012 Olympics win was announced. I don't think ZSL will have planned their resources to budget for any additional developments before 2012, especially with their commitment to the Biota aquarium at Silvertown Quays.

Still, I like your thinking Chris. Personally I think that London should integrate their reptiles and amphibians into the aquarium (moving some of the fish to Biota). Instead of building a Frog World (which we know is on the cards), do a walk-through Madagascar exhibit like Cotswold's new one. I would like to see geladas mixed with Nubian ibex on the Mappin terraces. I would also probably go with a sea lion pool rather than hippos. Thumbs up to the Spanish wolves and nocturnal/Australian themed exhibits!

where is this master plan

There have been several Master plans for London Zoo within the last 20 years or so.
I have a copy of one in the early 1990's which involves turning the Mappins into a Gorilla Mountain and extending the Elephant and Rhino Enclosures and having a Carnivore Conservation Centre with Asian Lions,Tigers and hunting dogs etc.
I will have to get it out soon. :)

I'll get it soon :) it is very interesting they had so many plans but none of them have happened!

dont forget to post it.

for my plan, it will mainly be mine and daleks visions, but will include as many exhibits as poss, which may meen some plans (eg chris's nocternal jungle) will be in a different place than what he said. Im still open to ideas, so if you want your dream london zoo exhibit to be part of my plan for the london zoos zoochat masterplan, desined by zoochatters, for zoochatters, then post your exhibit plans now!

im gonna try to clarify some of the harder to identify species

nocternal jungle

malayan tapir
bearded pig

3 island pond
orangutan

australia house, koala and not sure

Right here we go,
This is one of the master plans for the Zoo designed in the 1990's
The entrance is moved to Barclay Court and along the path going towards what is now the New Lion terraces a World of Invetebrates. The New Lion Terraces will be turned into a Carnivore Conservation Centre which will hosue Sumatran Tigers,Asian Lions and African Hunting Dogs and more but these are the only species noted.
The Childrens Zoo will be refurbished and expanded onto the Penguin Pool all that i can see is a big viewing area so the penguins will still be housed there. The Elephant and Rhino paddocks are expanded into bigger enclosures near to the Childrens Zoo and housed in the Casson Pavvillion and no plans for Zoo World or anything like that.
The area between the Reptile House and the Elephant Paddock houses a new Forest Conservation Centre which will have Spectacled Bears, forest Birds and Insects and the Asian Elephants next to it will be connected to the theme too.
The Mappin Terraces will be made into a Gorilla Moutain and will be Europes leading Breeding Centre for Gorillas.
The Primate area will be turned into the Primate Conservation Centre with smaller species with what looks like an outside area too with an Aviary next to it.
Accross the River the Giraffe/Tapir hosue with the Cotton Terraces stays the same with no new name or species noted on it.The Snowdon Aviary is again the same.Accros the bridge on the top side will be turned into a Madagascar Area which will focus on the Flora and Fauna of Madagascar particulary in Lemur Species.
Accross the River the Clore Small Mammals Pavillion stays the same but the other side of the old Gorilla House an Imax Cinema will be built to show Conservation videos to inspire the public.
The Aquarium will also be revamped to house Tropical underwater Enviroments more clearly.
Ive tried to explain it as best as i can!
Any Questions feel free to ask and i hope you have enjoyed the Review of a London Zoo Masterplan. :)

That sounds interesting, can't imagine gorillas on the Mappins though...

Also at one point there was talk of an expansion of 10-12 acres into Regent's park, along the southwest edge of the zoo. This was not long before the zoo went into free-fall in the 80s

It was very very close to closing down in the 1990's some people are still suprised that it didnt!
Still it i probably one of the most interesting and historical zoos there is :)

just want to inform all users that i never wrote that insulting comment?? or commented on this thread..my computer was turned off over night but i remained loged into zoochat, someone hacked my account

okay jack, ibelieve you, is there any exhibit you want to see.

the insult is deleted now, what did it say

As the comment was Deleted by Sim it would be best not to know what it was Cat-Man as it was deleted for a reason.
I would love to see African Lions in the Mappins :) but that is sadly not going to happen.
Has everybody seen my Review of the Masterplan?

referring back to the first few posts on this thread, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) who own Highland Wildlife Park just outside Aviemore & Edinburgh Zoo are planning a site in Glasgow called 'Imuya', with thoughts of having this ready for the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow

the site planned is beside one of the Athlete Villages and it is thought to be based around the amazon river

That certainly looks quite promising and it seems Edinburgh Zoo and its Zoological Society have been in the planning stages on the Glasgow project for several months now.

If I am correct the Council of Glasgow City are quite supportive of a new zoological institution after the demise of the now infamous Glasgow Zoo and were keen to get the Society IN!

that would be nice:), But it would never happen

I want elephants to return to London (i know it will never, in a million years happen)
But ovbiously they can't go in their old envlosure as it's a bit too small for a full herd of elephants, but i suppose if the zoo extends into regents park they could build a fantastic elephant habitat. They could also put the
