ZSL London Zoo London Developments

It was probably photographed at Whipsnade... All the publicity material- banner hoardings, cage information photos etc of Gorillas for the Gorilla Kingdom exhibit are not the London Gorillas but were taken at Blackpool Zoo! (Gorilla Kingdom obviously not being complete at the time..)

Chester did this with mniture monkeys, the photos of the monkeys were actually taken at Belfast Zoo.

I don't have any objection really- their publicity departments can't be blamed for having to get the stuff ready in advance of the opening date. What does bug me though is when the publicity information includes deliberate untruths in order to be more effective....:(

do you mean like London saying their Gorillas had never been outside in the sun before when all three of them had.

Yes, that is EXACTLY the statement I was talking about. I reckon somebody watched the film 'The Urban Gorilla' where Atlanta Zoo's silverback male Willie B. ventures outside into a new enclosure for the very first time- it even says " for the first time since he was a baby, he can see the open sky" etc. That was genuine- but London Zoo thought- what a lovely idea, we'll use it...

I have photos of their male Bongo/Bobby when he was at Bristol Zoo- out on the open island... he was there about three years !!

plus the older female came from jersey and the new female was presumably had an outdoor enclosure in her old home aswell.

Definately- Zaire grew up in a huge open area. Effie formerly lived in Berlin which has a nice open outdoor enclosure. Even at London they only had a mesh roof- big deal....

Does Kate Moss have any babies?

'Effie' is quite a slim female. She has had two babies while living in Berlin Zoo- but both had to be handreared. She was sent to Leipzig Zoo in order to try and learn from other females, by example, how to rear babies. But they quickly found her disruptive in their group, so then she was moved to London.

If London do add another female or two to the 'group' of three, I don't know what Effie's reaction will be? Effie is currently the best bet for breeding but I don't know if the male has shown any interest....

actually, I don't mind them referring to her as the 'Kate Moss' of Gorillas, that's just a bit of fun- but the other is a deliberate lie...

similarly, Port Lympne included their Sumatran Rhino among their successful 'repatriation schemes' when it was very much the reverse....

London has had Sumatrans previous to the two current animals, in the 1980s and I'm pretty sure they have not produced any cubs. I'm guessing there has been at least one swap since the start of 90s, otherwise their two tigers would arguably be past breeding age.

London have recently exchanged their 12 year old female Sumatran tiger Raika with the female from Dudley zoo, Sarah. Sarah has already produced cubs with Dudley's male, Filon.

Have dudley bred these animals well? Isn't chester's sumatran male from dudley?

On that note does anyone know when chester will acquire a female for him?

Kepala, the male Sumatran at Chester, did indeed come from Dudley and is one a litter of triplets born to Sarah and Filon in June 2005. Kepala's siblings also moved out of Dudley this year, Indah (female) to Howletts and Penekar (male) to Lisbon.

does anyone have any news about the new amphibian breeding centre that they are planning

All I know is that is is called Frog World and should have been open by mid 2007. The cost is £2 million, or £4 million, depending on which source the information is obtained from. (Info from 2005). Chester Zoo are planning an Amphibian Ark, which I expect is a similar project.

Durrell are also planning an amphibian exhibit, although on a slightly more modest scale than London or Chester! It will consist of two shipping containers, one to house endangered exotic frogs and one to house the agile frog which is native to Jersey. The cost? £30,000 for the first container. Visitors won't be allowed inside but they will be able to look in through windows.

'Frog World' is such a terrible name!
