Hi

Can anyone tell me if the Aye Aye at London zoo are still on exhibit as they do appear on the new map.

If not what happened to them ?

Thanks

A whole wing of the Clore is now off exhibit so they could have an enclosure there. I'd be interested to know if having 'real' night and day is better for their behaviour and reproduction potential than simlated nocturnal exhibits.

This is a great example of something ZSL could be blogging about, it would be great to follow their progress and learn about the set-up even if we can't see them.

This could be the large enclosure on the left of the closed wing of the Clore that housed Ruffed Lemurs years ago . I am sure I have heard that they are now housed somewhere here .

I always sound like a broken record on this issue, but I have yet to see a convincing argument for keeping most small mammal species in indoor, reverse-lighting conditions. Some animals do require very dry air (eg Sand cats), and some benefit from high humidity, but reverse-lighting really only seems to benefit the public. I always cite Marwell's outdoor douracouli enclosure as a really good example of this; you usually get to see them looking out of their nest box, and they have, for the last decade or so, been the strongest breeding group of douracouli in any UK zoo.

The off-exhibit wing of the Clore has been closed since the rainforest lookout was opened in 2007. I don't know how long the aye-aye have been there, as the Roundhouse has been closed for almost as long. Some well-planted, spacious outdoor offshow cages have been added to the back of the building over the last couple of years, I'm hopeful the aye-aye have access to one of these.

Small guided tours in the evenings can add revenue and provide access for those members of the public more interested in seeing unusual species that the daytime crowds miss.....I see no conflict with keeping a number of these species off unsupervised public display.

You're right about updates. Animals having 'world cup' or 'halloween' themed enrichment is not news, especially when your press team repeats the trick year on year.

So true! I'd love to have the job of ZSL's online communications person. I don't have a problem with these kinds of stories as long as there are some more in-depth stories too.

This is now a red panda enclosure.

You missed a couple - 'New Year's Animal Stocktaking' and one that may have appeared recently again 'Zoo's animals beat the heatwave with Fruity Iced lolly enrichment blocks'....:D

I think Bele was referring to the original outdoor cage, surrounded by viewing corridors, at the back of the old clore, by the black rats. It used to house ruffed lemurs for many years, before holding saki monkeys (when the lemurs went to the Sobell), and later Pine Martens. I assume this cage still exists, unless the rainforest lookout took out this part of the building.

The red pandas, from what I can tell, are in the newer outdoor cages by the meerkats, which held gentle lemurs for quite a while, before briefly holding red ruffed lemurs.

I see, I know where you mean now. Would love to see behind the scenes, I think low intensity pre-booked tours for limited numbers would be wonderful as you suggested. It could even be a members event.

No , the large enclosure I was thinking of was indoors , opposite the Quarantine section , cannot remember what has been housed here recently .

They're in the 'Night Life' area of Rainforest Life at Clore Rainforest Lookout.
