ZSL London Zoo London Zoo News 2023

Quick summary of my visit yesterday
1. The Saki monkey trio appears to have settled in well.
2. The two empty nocturnal animal enclosures that are opposite the aye ayes have had substrate and branches installed. A sign was provided but it only said "there are no animals here at present as the enclosure is being refurbished but please look behind you for the Aye-ayes".
3. No changes have happened to the outdoor warthog enclosure. All structures and enrichment remain in place.
4. The exterior of the secret life of reptiles and amphibians appears to have been completed. Planting has begun to take place along the exhibits perimeter.
5. The Casson pavilion was open to the public. Benches have been installed inside as have a number of random facades and wooden boards. Perhaps to make the place feel less open.
6. The timeline in the East Tunnel has been updated. Concept art for monkey valley has been removed and replaced with new concept art of a new entrance area. The gift shop is in the background so I assume the new entrance will be in within regents park perhaps were the current exit is.
7. Both the bird safari and gorilla kingdom aviary are open to the public.
8. The path between the reptile house to Attenborough Komodo dragon house / former tortoise area is open. The former tortoise enclosure has been fenced off. It did not appear that any work has taken place since the tortoises vacated.

That's interesting, and quite exciting. Are the indoor areas for the Babirusa and Red River Hogs on-show, or is it just for visitors at the moment?

If I recall correctly from recent visits the inside of the Casson at present has inside viewing for the Red River Hogs and the Babirusa plus potentially a third area depending upon whether the Babirusa are separated or together. However they have between those visits added additional shielding which provides more privacy to the animals but does now reduce the viewing. The furniture bench etc I believe is primarily there for when that area is used for the zoos various educational/activity trails.

Looking at the photo, you can see the Broad Walk to the left so this would be roughly where the east service gate is now. The gift shop shown would be the back of the current building from this angle.

The other day I noticed a very round female Gorilla is their a baby due or just a well fed Gorilla lady?
Could well be, as Kubri came in November we saw him
And the female together in February and they were mating so their could be a baby due in august/ September!

The old penguin pool now has ducks, the rubber kind. Or should that be Flexilis flexilis flexilis? It is for Zoo Nights, massive game of hook a duck.

New warthogs will be arriving soon.

Golden lion tamarin born in the rainforest, the ones in the side enclosure, not the golden headed in the walkthrough.

Plastic ducks, some visitors completely unaware about Zoo Nights, couldn’t understand why the pool had ducks. I’ve suggested to the zoo that a notice could be helpful
Warthogs, I believe are 2 brothers
Not easy to sport baby Golden Lion tamarin but Mum is often outside with baby on her back

I suppose this is the best fit for this exhibit. It was never fit for purpose for penguins, and clearly Harry Styles has escaped!

On that note - what has been in there over the years? Various penguins species obviously. But I think I remember Chinese alligator and a species of porcupine too?

Indeed both Chinese alligator and African crested porcupine have been housed in the Lubetkin Penguin Pool. ( One of the porcupines was an albino.)

Would be nice to see a species like that again in there as they suit it pretty well provided there's some substrate. Even meerkats could work in that environment, not that I'm suggesting that any zoo get more of those things
