ZSL London Zoo London Zoo News 2023

For visitors to London Zoo, they can now download an app onto mobile phone.
It is an OK app, but it seems to be missing some animals that are pretty prominent. It is missing babirusa and Chinese Water deer for example. That is similar to apps like the one for ZooTampa, which seems to be based on the same basic platform and design.

It's made with the same format that many zoo apps like Chester, Colchester and Yorkshire wildlife park use. Although I did notice a couple design differences to the other apps

Yeah, they must market it to zoos globally. It is a nice format, but they often seem to miss entire exhibits for some reason. They miss red wolves, black bear, and a sizable aviary in the ZooTampa app.

Yeah I've noticed that in a couple of the apps. I do hope they go back to the London zoo app and fix their mistakes. Hopefully they'll make a whipsnade zoo map too to go with the London zoo one

Hopefully, but I would not hold my breath, the ZooTampa app has been missing those habitats since it came out over a year ago.

For the first time I downloaded an app when I visited Chester Zoo recently. I found it useless. I tried navigating via the app but when I zoomed out to get a complete look at the zoo, my phone screen became crowded with exhibit markers. I hope these apps don't get seen as a replacement for paper maps.

The Chester Zoo paper map is not very good.

For anyone interested they’re made by a company called Attractions.io and you can see their portfolio on their website.

In response to a question as to whether the new reptile house currently being constructed at London Zoo meant that the old reptile house would close, It was advised that it was no longer possible to provide the complex environmental conditions for reptiles and amphibians in the existing building, and therefore the collection would be housed in the purpose-build new reptile house. However, recognising that the site could not have another closed building next to the main entrance other, non-animal, uses for the building were being explored.

The Reptile House closed on October 31st.
The 'Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians' is due to open in 2024.

Zoology Jottings: The Reptile House at London Zoo: the beginning of the end says that the Reptile House was not ideal to breed animals and much of its old equipment was unusable. The new house will have better facilities to incubate eggs and raise young animals to adulthood.

Quick Question, Why is London's Zoo reptile house closing? Will it reopen?
It will reopen as a museum of the zoo’s history, while the reptile collection is moved to a brand new, more modern, greenhouse-like structure in the centre of the zoo, where the amphitheatre once was. Construction is just about complete, so we are only waiting on the enclosures themselves to be developed and for the animals to settle in. The plan is to have it open by February, although I wouldn’t be surprised if there are further delays. A shame that the historic reptile house is now closed, but as alluded to by @tennisfan , there were very good reasons behind the decision, and the new house looks excellent.

It has been rumoured for sometime that the old 1927 Reptile House will be converted to a London Zoo museum.

Have you seen any official notification from the ZSL that this is the plan?
It appears as though I may have misunderstood what others, both on this site and elsewhere, have said, and assumed that the plans were official when it was not the case. My apologies if that is the case!

You've nothing to apologise for!
You might well be correct about the old 1927 Reptile House being converted into a zoo museum.
However I first heard rumours about the zoo museum more than a year ago but have still not seen anything official to that effect. I wondered if you (or anyone else) had heard anything definite.

I'm in the zoo this afternoon.
Notice outside the old Reptile House states the building will be transformed into a "fun new place for families".
No mention of Zoo Museum.
