Does anyone know if the very long-lived Chapman's Zebra stallion is still at Whipsnade? He arrived as an adult in the original Marwell group in 1970 and then 'retired' to Whipsnade some years ago. He was still alive and very fit-looking three or four years ago when he was aged 35+ and something of a record holder.

Last year I saw two Chapman's zebra males together in the paddock opposite the Lake cafeteria. I was told one was a recent arrival so I presumed that the other one was him.

He would now be 39+
Can any one confirm if he is still there?

Charlie was still there earlier this year, none of my contacts there were able to confirm where the new Chapmans Stallion came from though.

Didn't know his name but that is great news...:)

I asked about the newcomer's background last year too but without a firm answer.

Was able to snatch a quick word with a keeper today and he confirmed that unfortunately the elderly male Chapman's Zebra recently died. The other male is still in with the Gemsbok. Wasn't able to get any more info I'm afraid as both he and I were in a bit of hurry.

Thanks for the sad news. He must have been at least 40 as he was adult when imported to Marwell in 1970.

I was at Whipsnade on Friday; I didn’t know then that, sadly, ‘Charlie’ had died.

This long-lived Chapman’s zebra is listed in “Longevity of Mammals in Captivity; From the Living Collections of the World” (Richard Weigl; 2005) as still being alive on 12 August 2004 at an estimated age of 36. Assuming that he was 40+ when he died, he would be older than any of the other zebras featured in this book. (The next oldest listed is a Grant’s zebra that died at an estimated age of 38.)
