Right, so a zoomix then, or are they 100% Masai, Transvaal, Barbary, Kalahari, Somali or Katanga? There aren't many pure subspecies of lion about (except P. l. persica, not sure exactly how pure they are but I think they are). Most African lions in Europe at least are a mix of African ssp. hybrids.

Barbary Lions were African too, although the only subspecies occurring north of the Sahara. The male 'Kabir' was considered a 'Barbary' Lion at Port Lympne where he was a breeding male in their Barbary Lion programme. However, the exact status of all the so-called 'Barbary' Lions in zoos is disputed by the scientific evidence and DNA testing which has been done on some individual lions.

re the purity of Asian lions in zoos. My understanding is that there was a 'purge' of doubtful animals [late 70s/early 80s?] when these were removed from the breeding programme. Can anyone back this up?

Correct. In the UK there were 'Asiatic' Lions at both Jersey and Marwell which were later found to be impure. I think there may have been some similar in Europe too.

The current programme dates from a fresh importation circa 1990, of four pairs to European Zoos. These are completely pure (afaik) and unconnected with any previous 'Asians' that were in zoos prior to then.

History of Longleat lions...

I have got some information, if some members can correct/add then please do.:)

Luna and Yendi were both born in 2000/01, there father was Mafue. Luna and Yendi between them have had 16 cubs and one of Luna/Yendi's daughter's Malakia has had four cubs with new male Nibalo.

The first two cubs born to Luna, Yendi and Kabir were Jasira and Malakia. The two female cubs were born at the end of 2005.

The second litter was two males (Wallace now at Blackpool and Dudley now at Blair Drummond SP) and two females (Sweet-Pea and Mildred both still at Longleat) the four cubs were born in June 2006.

The third litter was three males (Now in Denmark) and a female (Who's name I don't know but she's still at Longleat) born in August 2007 to Luna and Kabir.

Yendi's latest litter was the first since 2007, four cubs born 12th March 2011. One male Klaus and three females Tanya, Eva and Kianya.

Malakia's first litter was born 10th September 2011, two males Simba and Nyota, two females named Enzi and Nala.

Luna's latest litter was two cubs yet to be sexed. Born 27th September 2011.
