I didn't know Hippos and Beavers can share the lakeLovely visit today, highlights for me were the tigers who I have never seen so active, I also FINALLY saw the warthog!
Some things to note:
- No sign of the prehensile tailed porcupines. There was no keeper to ask about there whereabouts but instead there were some hermann's tortoises in the enclosure
- There is an Emu chick at Family Farmyard. Press realise for that coming soon.
- In the 2021 guide book it lists Red Squirrels being in the monkey temple (assume they are currently off show)
- Kinkajou are currently off-show but will be moving permanently to the old indoor coati enclosure in Jungle Kingdom once it has had some work, they will also have access to the over head tunnel but not the outdoor enclosure as that now has DikDik.
- Cane toad now on show in a window at koala creek
- New zebra mice habitat where the green iguanas used to be
- Poteroo's have moved back in with the koalas after being with the lorikeets the last few months.
- No sign of the great white pelicans (the ones at the far end of the lake)
Oh and check this out!
Hippos and beavers share UK lake for first time in millennia
^^
Didn't spot any on the boat today but still very exciting and the keeper told me they have no idea where they came from....
Perfectly timed for my visit! From today (19th June) until 12th September there is a new exhibition in The Longhouse at Longleat called 'Museum of the Moon'. It will contain a six-metre wide replica of the moon as well as several displays for nocturnal plants and animals including bioluminescent algae, blind cave fish, emperor scorpions and slender lorises. The post on Facebook advertising the exhibition also has a photograph of moon jellyfish.

I managed to get to see this a couple of days ago and it was really good! I didn't see the Hedgehog unfortunately but I did see a Camel Spider which was a bonus!
From what I saw, there were a pair of Slender Loris (I spoke to one of the keepers there and he mentioned they were going to try and find a more permanent spot for them in the park after the exhibitor closes - whether that means putting them into Jungle Kingdom, Animal Adventure or some new are I don't know), there were numerous small tanks dotted around which contained Emperor Scorpions, Camel Spiders, Blind Cave Fish and Upside Down Jellyfish. What’s the species list of this exhibition?
Under the Moon is on until the 12th SeptemberFrom what I saw, there were a pair of Slender Loris (I spoke to one of the keepers there and he mentioned they were going to try and find a more permanent spot for them in the park after the exhibitor closes - whether that means putting them into Jungle Kingdom, Animal Adventure or some new are I don't know), there were numerous small tanks dotted around which contained Emperor Scorpions, Camel Spiders, Blind Cave Fish and Upside Down Jellyfish.
The Loris exhibit was really good, not only cause the lighting was bright enough to see them clearly, but also because it was open air without any barriers but a low fence so you could see them very easily without obstruction. There was a Long-Eared Hedgehog which was sharing the exhibit which was apparently pregnant but I didn't spot it unfortunately.
Have a look at this
it would but the building where the bats used to live has now been given back to the House and the Heritage team so that the Coach House can be restored back to it's former glorySeems a real shame they can't make this a permanent exhibit, it would be a much welcome replacement for Bat Cave. But good news they are hopeful to rehouse the species afterwards.
So where is the link for it then ?Longleat has recently submitted a planning application to expand Koala Creek. The new area will take the site of the former Monkey Temple. The first major phase of the development is a new nocturnal house with a focus on Australian mammals. Current species (more to be added) on the list include:
Feather Tailed Glider
Bilby
Echidna
Quolls (species not mentioned)
Spinnifex Hopping Mice
Possums
A new Wombat enclosure will also be built within the nocturnal house. They are on the waiting list to import more Wombat's at a later date. They are intending (subject to planning and any delays importing the animals) to have the new Nocturnal house ready by Easter 2023
The second phase of the development is a set of three separate enclosures on the site of the current children's play area adjacent to Animal Adventure and surrounding area. These will be for Dingo, Goodfellows Tree Kangaroo (mixed with Pademelon) and Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. This second phase should be open by Summer 2024
All the plans and drawings etc are available to view on Bath Council's website.
