Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park 2024

I really like Ben and Kate, but they are so twee and patronising, it’s annoying.

That said, they are probably directed that way because it’s aimed at kids.

I much preferred the first series with Paul Heiney

Sad news announced this morning but what a legacy!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jessie, our popular Tapir, at the age of 28.

Jessie was a great-great-grandmother whose descendants live across Europe as part of the international breeding programme. She had been receiving palliative care for the last few months.

Darren Beasley, head of animal operations, said: “She is very much going to be missed. She has been here longer than some of the keepers caring for her have been alive; she very much recognised her keepers and would roll over for them and loved her tummy being scratched. She was popular with them and with our guests.

“She has struggled with her movement over recent months, and we moved to palliative care to ensure she was as comfortable as possible. However, she deteriorated over the last few days and she was put to sleep yesterday morning.”

Tina Wilkin, Lead Keeper Safari, said: “Jessie would do anything for watermelons and hot cross buns. She was a keeper favourite and even though she has slowed down recently, she still enjoyed a swim in the pond as well as treats and cuddles from the keepers.”

Jessie had been at Longleat since November 1997 and Denzil in 2000, who lives at Exmoor Zoo. Denzil has subsequently fathered eight children, which resulted in seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Chico was born in 2002 and is the dad to Tallulah, who lives at Longleat, and six other offspring. Gomez arrived in 2006 and Hugo in 2007. They, along with Chico, have since moved to other zoos.

Tallulah, Jessie’s granddaughter, can still be seen at the park and Tina says: “Jessie definitely gave Tallulah confidence, and she is the Tapir she is today because of Jessie.”

what happened to the third fennec fox kit? i know their mum had three but social media is only showing the two that were hand reared

They did cover the fennec fox kits on Animal Park.

The mother fox had a poor record of raising young in the past. They decided to hand rear two and leave one with the mother to see if she could manage a single kit. The one left with the mother sadly didn't survive.

ah thank you for explaining, i'm not up to date with animal park

Meet Maple the baby dik-dik, who was born here at Longleat this summer ❤️
As Maple is so shy and timid, we're not able to check their sex yet, but our keepers describe them as a mini-me of their mum.
See if you can spot Maple with mum and dad Daenerys and Dario when you next visit!

Unsure how many offspring this pair have had or wether this is the first successful calf from this pair

Apart from Heidi & Seeka they could have chosen better names for the other 2 but they are the names chosen so.

Thank to everyone who took part in our naming vote for our tiger cubs! Your votes have been counted and we're very excited to introduce...

Dora-boo, Ginger Biscuit, Heidi and Seeka!

See if you can pick out who's who when you next see these gorgeous girls.

Im sorry, but those are some truly awful names. Who had the final say? Mr Tumble?

They also have fennel foxes dot and other so Longleat will soon have a tradition for random names for their animals! I can’t see how they can last when they go to
other Collections. Understand rusty and Yuki similar to parents, but what does a ginger biscuit relate to a tiger? And Dora boo won’t be a cub for long and so will she be Dora boo when fully grown.

They better be joking if they expect them to carry on those names they got one nasty surprise coming….

The names are patently silly but what sort of ‘nasty surprise’ could really result?
The other theme parks changing their names making them lose their only connection to their birthplace (sorry if I made it sound like something worse)

Dora-boo and Ginger Biscuit. Awful names again. Why are Longleat so unserious? I imagine their names will be changed as soon as they arrive at their future collections.

Agreed. And you could also argue it doesn’t reflect particularly well with their relationship with other collections.

Ah yes more silliness resulting! That risk makes sense. I haven’t seen these sort of names for a while I was a bit surprised they were choices in the first place as, as we know, people will often choose a really bad one if given the opportunity!

They might as well have called them all Boaty McBoatface!
