Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park 2024

Not going to lie, I was already baffled by them naming a fennec fox Other.

But Dora-Boo and Ginger Biscuit are... I'm sorry, I just can't take the world's biggest cat seriously with those names. They could have at least shorten them to Dora and Ginger.

At least with Rusty and Yuki their names had some kind of reference to their parents. Both beginning with the same letter as their parents, and being rather simple (Rusty and Red) or exotic (Yuki and Yana).

Either way, here's to Dora-Boo, Ginger Biscuit, Heidi and Seeka I guess?

I suppose I'm in the minority that finds the names silly but not exactly a crime against tiger-kind. Certainly they're memorable, and I would be shocked if the majority of us weren't ever so slightly bored of generic 'native' names by now, at least for big cats.

Ginger Biscuit got a chuckle out of me, although Dora-Boo is a rather odd one. But as others have said, their names will likely change when moved - almost certainly if moved to the continent.

Visit notes from yesterday:
- Giant African Land Snails now in the spider lab, it would seem that the desertas wolf spiders have been phased out and replaced with Chilean Rose Tarantulas.

- The Indoor Area for the North American porcupine has been cleared of all the hay and work was being done on the outdoor area.

- The Nile monitor sign has been removed and a shutter has been pulled down over the enclosure, and with debates over putting some nine banded armadillos on show, it looks promising, but it raises the question of what happened to King Tut...

I was told today that King Tut has sadly passed away, as has Ida the Lemur.

King Tuts enclosure is currently holding the Sloths while work is being done in their room.

I was also told that Yuki the Tiger is being moved to Knowsley Safari early next year.

Yay they may have new bloodline with Makari tiger from whipsnade already at Knowsley and Yuki paired up hopefully for cubs! As Makari is only 6 and yuki is 4/5 so nice age together

Yes, I hope so too. My children used to love the elephant shrew and the kingsake that replaced it! Well they do have some Asian forest Scorpions and a tiger rump tarantula, so that might be a possibility...

Visit Report- 30.10.24

- The Cameroon Sheep Now live in a field by the the giraffe house.

-The African Pymgy goats now occupy the old Cameroon Sheep exhibit.

- There's now some forest Scorpions in the spider lab.

-two of the guinea pigs have moved back into sloth Paradise

The 2 individuals in Sloth Paradise are new individuals who have arrived very recently :)

Well that's a welcome surprise! Hopefully it'll gain some new inhabitants like their temporary nocturnal exhibit in the Longhouse, it's definitely one of the quintessential Longleat exhibits

Do you know what is currently held in the Longhouse? It seems a shame that they didn't feature the exhibit at all on Animal Park this year, or did they cover it previously?

@JamesB No animals are currently held in the longhouse. The temporary exhibit cerperal mentioned was called under the moon, and it was there from August till September 2022. I don't believe it was ever featured on animal park, but there are some short vids on YouTube about it:)

The Longleat app states there are poison dart frogs in the safari, but I've never seen any there. Is this just a mistake or is this actually true?

Unless they've been moved to the African Village, which I doubt, I would imagine it's a mistake.

But given the former Animal Adventure area, where they were and as far as I know still are held, is being renovated it's entirely possible they've been moved. I doubt to the safari though...

Is animal adventure being renovated at the moment and if so what are the plans?

The sloths are being moved to the Bat Cave (thankfully, even if they didn't show any signs of distress the open room was evidently not a fantastic exhibit for them), outside of that they haven't revealed what's happening. I'd imagine they'll do it over the Winter closure period, hopefully the number of species held is increased as it's always been mainly dead space

*Exciting development announced*

We're hoping to bring hippos back!
We were home to Spot and Sonia for almost 50 years before their passing, and we’ve all missed seeing them grazing the paddocks, wallowing in mud baths and swimming in Half Mile Pond.
Today we're excited to announce that we've submitted plans for new 21st century accommodation for a pod consisting of a bull, females and any potential offspring.
Please keep your eyes peeled for more updates on our social media over the coming months.
