Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

Longleat Safari Park

I realise the original remark about penguins in the lake at Longleat was a joke, but couldn't resist putting my oar in. Sorry. However, I don't think I would trust any pinniped not to eventually have a go at any small to medium sized moving object; this is, however, not based on any practical knowledge. However, there are good records of River Hippos eating people, and Pygmy Hippos eating monkeys and ducks [not suggesting either species makes a habit of this, merely that they cannot be trusted.....]

I think the hippos would be more of a problem but would they bother?

I have kept a penguin with a dolphin and a sea lion many years ago- no real problem but perhaps that was down to luck.

At Ocean Park they did have a penguin eaten by a sea lion but this was a Stella sea lions which are very big and aggressive and have been known to eat penguins in the wild along with Pataginian sea lions and, of course, leopard seals predate penguins. I did also hear of a large California bull killing a shag (a seabird) that shared his exhibit in a sea zoo many years ago.

Here is a link to a pdf brochure when Ocean Park opened. The mixed species exhibit is referred to as the seal pool and it also has a wave machine. It is still at the park but I think it only contains pinnipeds now.

Don't know, haven't been around the park for a while, I was sorting something at Longleat and just hopped on the boat to see the pup.

Also got a couple of questions leading on from my visit two weeks ago, what were the changes being made in the Bat Cave that caused it to be closed and are there any definite plans for (king) penguins in the near future as suggested by the train carriages?

She's doing very very well to say the least: Although there is still arthritis present in her back legs, she is on medication and is significantly improved on it since she arrived and has been very active for her age in her compound, making the most out of her sand pile and other enrichment activities. The keepers are also beginning to take her for walks to improve her condition further.

Thanks for the news, pleased to hear she is settling in well and not missing the world of sawdust and spangles too much.

Just got back from Longleat and posted these photos, the ones of elephant Anne, as I write, are less than two hours old, also a photo of the Hunters Of The Sky entrance, and one of the birds (anyone know what that one is?) according to the designer the first show will likely be be on Saturday 23 July (they are acclimatising having just arrived at Longleat yesterday). Also a photo of the baby zebra. Longleat vouchers, info, and photos
