Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

Based on the area photo'd in the main article, she'll be going back into the area where the elephants used to be anyway, which is definitely on show. Well done to everyone who sorted this out and I really look forward to seeing her later in the year. :)

Yes, well done to ADI for obtaining video and exposing their sick cruelty. I would prefer to see the owners in handcuffs but knowing this is ruining their business is some sort of justice for Anne. As the vet from Whipsnade said there are many questions that need to be answered. Thank goodness she is finally getting proper medical attention.

I'm sorry, was it Bobby Roberts that was attacking/mistreating the elephant. No, it was the groom WITHOUT Bobby's knowledge. The groom has done a runner and the owners have repeatedly stated in these articles how disgusted they were that it had been happening, and how guilty they feel since they hired him.

So is it fair that it's ruining their business when they haven't actually done anything wrong other than misjudge character [and I'm sure he came across very differently to get hired]?

In my opinion, they have done a lot more then just misjudging a character. Let`s guess how much training this romanian had in working with elephants in free contact?! Experienced, well trained, knowledgeable elephant keepers (who can easily get a job in a reputable zoo) cost a lot more money than a romanian worker, and this is a great example that you get exactly what you pay for. Hiring an unexperienced, most likely untrained, cheap worker from Romania and then letting him work with an elephant alone and unsupervised is not exactly "doing nothing wrong". Not to mention the danger they put him in - working with elephants in free contact isn`t exactly easy, and if you have no training and no supervision by experienced collegues who know the elephant, it`s outright dangerous.

If they couldn`t afford to hire qualified elephant keepers, they should have sent Annie to a zoo which can long ago.

Firstly I am also pleased that Anne has been re homed at Longleat, secondly as well as seeing the video footage of Anne being beaten by that scum bag which I found most upsetting, I was also upset to see Mrs. Moira being being interviewed and was clearly distressed. I remember this lady when she worked and travelled with her husband on Robert Brothers Circus, she was a straight speaking decent kind hearted lady, who on the retirement of her in laws,Mr.Bobby and Mrs. Kitty took out a show with her husband Bobby Roberts Super Circus, and a very hard life it is, travelling a circus, particularly a one with animals in the present political climate. As I remember all the elephants on Robert Brothers Circus were named after female members of the Roberts family, I think Anne was named after Bobby Roberts wife, Moira Anne Roberts.

I would not want to see elephants back at Longleat - there is no need for them the park has more than enough other species that take center stage there should be just a handful of zoos that have elephants those that can keep large herds in the largest of spaces not little pockets of pairs and trios - Its a shame about keith going his vision for the aviaries was really good - why the decision was taken to send annie to a place where she could not interact with other elephants I can't understand I know she would not of been a breeding female but surely the site and sound of other elephants would of made her new life better?

Introducing elephants isn't easy, they don't always get on, and she is an incredibly old animal for a captive elephant. I would prefer to see her retire in the woods at Longleat with one or two elderly companions, rather than move to Whipsnade to integrate into a breeding herd, although this wouldn't be disastrous either. Longleat clearly has elephant facilities with no elephants, so is a viable short-term measure at least.

People are talking as if hitting elephants is somehow shocking. I would argue that training elephants for free contact is a brutal process in itself and a broom isn't massively dissimilar to a bullhook. If people think elephants become trained for free contact by giving them a peanut every time they do something right, I would suggest a little research would change that idea.

One thing I especially love about that news report is;

"Rather than watching the animals like meerkats, monkeys and birds of paradise from the other side of fences..."

Have I missed something? Or is it just the press being themselves again? ;)
