Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

Longleat

A male tiger doesn't necessarily mean they have to breed them; there are lots of males at the Isle of Wight Zoo, and they aren't allowed to breed. Arguably a male 'hybrid' [generic] tiger with a group of females, presents a more natural and interesting spectacle than just the females. [Given that they don't hang around in groups to any great extent in the wild.....]. I thought the Longleat girls were pure Siberian [sorry, 'Amur'] anyway?

Ah, thanks for pointing that out Hemsley, didn't see it first time round.

So it was initially thought and they were planned for breeding, but further research showed that they were amur-bengal hybrids so I've heard.

I have vague memories of them being brought to Longleat under the assumption that they were indeed pure Amur, but later they were found not to be. I think they have a common ancestor with Anoushka over at Colchester who was found to be a Sumatran/have Sumatran genes.

2 New Rhino's are to arrive.
And not 2 but 3 male Lions are/have due at the park.
There's a new Warthog.

You sure on the rhinos?

Longleat now has 1.2 new young founder stock imported direct from South Africa some years ago + 0.2 young captive-bred rhinos from the Continent. You are implying another 2 to add on (this seems a little surprising to say the least)?

Care to clarify who, where, why, how and with what?

Charlie (Pride A) went off to Newquay Zoo to retire (even though he never bred)
One male (Pride B) moved to Blair Drummond Safari Park
3 others gone missing, presumed euthanised (Pride B)

New males will be brought in for Pride B towards the end of the year from another collection

The 3 'others' went to Givskud zoo in Denmark. They were not euthanised.

where is this new longleat website that has been referred to? I can only seem to find the old one

Yep, I've gotta feeling it will be on the 'official' site by the 19th (when Longleat reopens) and the new one looks so far a preview; only the links to the attraction details seem to work.

On the newer website it says 2 new Rhino or they have arrived?

As far as I can ascertain these 2 are the female captive-bred individuals imported in late 2010. It would seem realistic that both are now integrated with the adult group of 1.2. 1/2 of these captive-bred females is to move on to another UK collection later on (no time scale given and it may be 2+ years before it will come to pass).

The new web-site states that cheetahs will be a new species for Longleat . I am fairly certain that they had some cheetahs in the early days and might even have bred them , though possibly not successfully .

I am really interested the changes longleat are making. does anyone know if the cheetahs will be a drive through or drive by enclosure?

according to Anthony Smith's "Animals On View" (1977) they had them at the time he wrote his book

Not sure if its been said already but is the Giant Anteater Bonito, the same Bonito who was at London?

Longleat's original male came from Halle Zoo (Germany) so maybe they are attempting a batcelor pairing?

Yep, and they're also in a guide book I have from '74 (with the lions, they were the only carnivores in the park). Apparently there was even a novel written about a cheetah who escapes Longleat and joins a boy on the run in the countryside.

And @jamesc32, so far all that's known is they will be returning at some point from what someone here heard from a warden, but nothing else is written in stone.

.

The book is called The Runaways and is by Victor Canning. I was in a charity shop a few weeks ago and was lucky enough to come across a copy (having previously never heard of it) it's purely fiction but is still a lovely story for animal lovers
