Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2011

'Anne' the rescued elephant seems to have dropped out of sight recently on Zoochat. From this it seems she will stay at Longleat longterm, eventually being joined by others.

A nice video on the Longleat site of Anne walking around the grounds with her keepers

I was really pleased to be invited to photograph the new lion cubs at Longleat this week before they are released into their new enclosure (maybe next week). The photographs are going to be on my website Warminster Web (Warminster Web | News & Events) tomorrow, I thought being Longleat fans that you may like to see them, and there will be a short video (I was really there to photograph not film them). In the meantime you may like to look at the Longleat page for more photos (these will be updated regularly as will access offers) Longleat vouchers, info, and photos

As the article sugggests, Yendi is 10 years old, and has had at least 3 successful litters at the park, so she is the most experienced mother within the pride, it sort of makes sense her being with the new male first, especially if Longleat where desperate for lion cubs for the summer season. At least there will be 3 female cubs to boost the pride numbers. Good news.

You may also like to know that the new cheetah enclosure is just days away from being completed (then needs signing off) and Jonathan Cracknell, director of animal operations is in or about to go off to Africa (Namibia?) to arrange to get them (can't remember when he was due to go exactly). They are expecting to have some sort of movable track with something for them to chase on it. I will try to remember to keep posting here when I have animal news on Longleat, but you can always check Warminster Web | News & Events as it always goes on there (As well as covering local news I am a Longleat fan, and live just 5 minutes away).

It will be at the far end of the lake, within calling distance of Nico. Put this case reference W/11/00532/FUL into this web address to see the plans
Thanks for the link. Very interesting to read. It seems the new Gorillas/ enclosure will be viewable from the Boats on the lake but with no public access from the land or to the indoor House- similar to Nico on his island. They are going to add extra tree planting on the South side to further screen it from views from Longleat House. I couldn't tell what the barriers on the landward sides will be- electrified fencing?

There are some other improvement plans on here for the Estate generally, including the suggestion of reinstating Fallow Deer in the Capability Brown designed open 'Deer Park' areas of the estate. I would like to see that as I never understood quite why they were removed and enclosed within the Safari Park.

Yes, thank you for sharing the photos with us, nice ones of Anne playing in her sand, much appreciated

Talking to someone at Longleat on Friday it looks likely that the opening of the new gorilla facility at Longleat will be delayed until next year. It could be rushed through for the tail end of this season but that tail end is shortening. Personally I think that having secured the principle that they can build another facility they should use the delay and go back to the original plan of it being on a new island, so that the boat can go around it, not just past it, and be prepared to fight English Heritage at appeal, EH having objected to the shape of the lake being changed even marginally.

Hunters Of The Sky Still On Their Way... Having hoped that they would be at Longleat by Easter it is expected that the birds of prey flying displays will still make it to Longleat for the summer season, in fact on Friday the contractors were in putting up the corporate marquee near the car park because where it normally lives is where the flying displays will be.

Just heard that a giant anteater baby was born to Bonito and Maroni last week! :)

I got to see the baby anteater on Friday when I was at Longleat but mum wouldn't come outside and the baby stayed tucked up clinging to mum's back and concealed in her fur. So with that and shooting through glass and grille the photos are awful, I hope to do better soon. In the meantime if you want to see them they are on Warminster Web | News & Events

With Nico being so old, maybe the original island will become vacant around the same time- so is there any point in them building a new enclosure at all?

Nico's island, or more so his house, isn't really big enough for a group of gorillas now it would seem. I'm assuming they'll just give the island up to the sea lions or a species of gibbon/monkey when he dies.

Also, is the Summer season the summer holidays or literally Summer, ie start of June? Just I'll be going down there in the second week of June and don't know whether thats too early for the cheetahs or raptors.
