Looking to 2012

Just recieved the latest emailed newsletter from Longleat... Confirms that they expect the Cheetah to be out of quarentine in the next few weeks. The new Gorillas will also be arriving later in the year (WW suggests before Easter although Longleat haven't given a date)

The other new attraction they have announced today is a Lemur Walkthrough (Lemurs seem to be "in" atm :rolleyes: ) Doesn't say what species they are planning but I have few doubts about Ring Tailed's playing a big part...

Other news that Longleat confirmed via their facebook recently was that BBC have packed up and left again. No current plans for Roar, Animal Park or anything else, BBC wise to be filmed at the park in the near future.

No mention on how the how the Elephant sanctuary is coming along (or it being a major part of 2012's line up) so it could be 2013 before we see that.... Last update from December though was that Anne was doing very well :)

I imagine they will be cracking on with the enclosure to get them in by Easter if they possibly can, so they can market them for the complete 2012 season.

New Elephant Sanctuary In The Hands Of WC... Thursday 02 February 2012 Longleat are about to put in a planning application for a new elephant sanctuary for Anne and other rescued elephants, and as soon as it is approved Longleat will start building. So it will very soon be up to Wiltshire Council to decide when Anne and others like her can have a modern new rehab facility. Longleat is also to have a new 'Lemur Walkthrough' in the new African Village, which is currently being constructed in what was the East Africa Reserve, no exact date yet but it's hoped to be open for the Easter holidays. Meanwhile the new gorilla colony is being built at the end of Half Mile Lake, and the four gorillas may be on view as early as the end of May. By this summer, as well, visitors will be able to hand feed the giraffes from two new piers extending out over the reserve.

Just a quick question, but does anyone know what the situation is with the rhino breeding at Longleat?

Depends what you mean by the situation. They haven't had a calf from the trio from Africa plus the two females who arrived from Burgers and Munster. They thought either Razina or Marisha was thought to be pregnant in 2010 but it was an internal cysts.
 
He's the latest of several Lions that have 'retired' from Longleat to Newquay. A little sad for Newquay who only have these Lions in their declining years and finally put them down. But that's life.
 
Our friends at Warminster Web are reporting the following news...

Male cheetahs are now on permanent display.. females are being gradually introduced to them. A seventh Cheetah has now arrived and is in quarentine (no further details given) The males are called Max, Casey and Carl if anyone is interested...

It is planned to later run the cheetah's on a non live bait system (similar to what is used for Greyhound racing)

0:0:2 Scimitar Horned Oryx have been born in recent months..

The Alpha female Timber Wolf passed away in 2011.. Having not bred for the previous few years. They are now intending to source new blood before starting again in the future.

Latest dates for Lemur Walkthrough, Giraffe feeding and new Gorilla's is June

Planning permission will be submitted later in 2012 for the Elephant sanctuary

It has been mentioned but in November and December 2011, two Rothschild Giraffes calves were born. The mothers are Twiza and Gloria, sire is Doto (Arrived from Woburn in 2009).
 
Cheetahs Not Released

Despite having been told by Longleat that some of the cheetahs would be released into their permanent enclosure this weekend they were not out when I visited on Saturday, or this morning (Tuesday).
 
Penguin enclosure will be opening later in 2012... 20 Birds have already been agreed from Seaview, IOW (same place that provided Wingham's group) doesn't say where they expect to have the enclosure on site (I'd naturally expect it around the lake somewhere)

Edit: Didn't note before that the Penguins will be on site sooner rather than later. Longleat will recieve them as eggs and handrear the resulting chicks off show...

Excellent, let's hope their planning application for the penguin enclosure goes through quickly now then (it's been slow).
 
When was the Giant anteater born? I know it was 'early March' does anybody have date? On the penguin front it seems Longleat have become the fourth out of the five British zoo's do acquire penguins. We only need Knowsley to complete it. ;)
