Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2012

My understanding is it is for a batchelor group of 5 males. I don't know if these 5 have been sourced yet.

Im confused about the cheetahs. Is the plan for all 7 to be run together as a group? have cheetahs ever been bred from as a large group before? I would also be grateful if any one could enlighten me on where the cheetah enclosure is, and how big it is? I onyl live 10 miles down the road I really should stop being so lazy and just go and visit!

Sun bears would be interesting as a drive through, and probably more active than the lions and tigers who spend 23 hours out of 24 sleeping.

Does anyone have plans for the new penguin enclosure, or know exactly where it would go?

On an unrelated note, I saw in a photograph anteaters at longleat being kept with mara. i have not seen anteaters kept in a mixed enclosure before, is there any reason for this? For example, at edinburgh zoo, the anteaters have a large enclosure on the hillside, with rhea and guanaco also in their own separate fields (while the cats live in small cats). Why couldn't they stick the rhea in with the guanaco and use the spare paddocks for large cat enclosures?

I recently ran the longleat 10km. Why? god knows. I noticed (in between palpitations and vomiting) that the deer are now in a big field beyond the maze, with a feeding area. Who lives in the old deer safari paddock now then? Is it to make way for a bigger african reserve?

I believe Anteaters have been kept with Mara before and Blackpool are currently mixing them.

Penguins are supposed to be on 'half mile lake'.

Longleat

Yes; there have only ever been a few wild Mallard on the lake for that reason.

im assuming there will be or may be a barrier between the 2 or the penguins in an enclosure close to the lake

Definately they will have been by now, as its due to open quite soon. I am pretty sure where they are coming from and which animals, but will refrain from saying here yet as I am not 100% sure- but think of the most obvious location in the UK for starters...;)

Just speculating but having re-read some of the publicity material for the new gorilla exhibit 'take the jungle cruise bound for the new gorilla colony' do you think there is a chance they may make another port/dock by the new enclosure for inside viewing etc? this would also provide some on-land viewing of the hippos and sealion beach..just a thought :)

But if they put the penguins on half mile lake won't the sealions eat them?

Unlikely. I know of a number of places that have done this. California seem okay - I wouldn't try it with Stella sea lions however ;)

Not sure if they are going on the lake - anyone have more information?

They are being supplied from the Isle of Wight. Interesting note about having to hand-rear the penguins. Many zoos have stopped this to be honest unless there are actual problems. Even then, I know of at least one zoos which has been successful at supplement feeding young penguins on the nest.

Longleat picks up Island?s penguins

I doubt it very much, I think it will be a simple cruise past and they may throw out some food to attract them closer to the water possibly.

It seems a big investment and a rather wasted opportunity if its just going to be viewed from the boat. Shame really.

I emailed longleat today and apparently there is no due date for the opening of gorrila colony. Also, they are yet to reply the genderof the new seized cheetah

Thanks Warminster web,I just got it confirmed that the seventh cheetah is male.Am awaiting to find out whether they wish to breed all of them.Hopefully if they are for breeding,we can hope for the pitter-patter footsteps of cheetah cubs footsteps.Fingers crossed!:)

Average age

What is the average age for the cheetahs at longleat?I predict they are youngish(2 maybe?).Does anyone know?

Longleat london zoo gorilla and penguins

We are going for our first visit this weekend and can't wait to see the Cheetah.
Mr Warminster web is this your site?

Warminster Web | Longleat News & Photos

Lots of good news on Longeat animals.
We have just read all the latest information and will try and buy a ticket to go more than once, we love the boat ride and will want to see the London zoo Gorilla again when he moves to his new home, it looks super.
We did not know where the gorillas were coming from.
We will report back after our weekend.

Looking at this link, it states a male is going to Longleat from London, which can only mean one thing, has it been confirmed anywhere else that Kesho is leaving? It also states 2 are going there from Twycross, I'm not an expert on the plce, but was there on Sunday and thought they only had the 2 males, both quite old to be forming batchelor group?

The bachelor group seems to be consisted up of two brothers (Alf and Kesho) and two males from Twycross (Oumbie and Boulas) it is a mystery was to why Oumbie is leaving as he is a proven breeder. Unless Twycross are planning the arrival of a new male as well as London who are too.

Maybe Longleat's plan is that they will form a bachelor group and when three leave maybe then Oumbie will be the breeding male and females then brought in for him.

Warminster Web / Gorillas

Hi

First, yes Warminster Web is run by myself, glad you like it. Longleat is an amazing place that gets better and better, I am lucky to live just 10 minutes from it.

The info on the gorillas was from a member of staff but not management, so it is possible it is wrong, though as they work on the boats they should know. I have no knowledge of other venues so don't know what animals they have. Reference the earlier question about the ages of the cheetahs I have no idea, though I believe them to be young with a view to breeding later on.

If its correct then I think it might be difficult to form a group with three adult males which have never been together before- Boulas, Oumbie and/or Kesho- living together easily.
If Oumbie is really leaving Twycross as well as Boulas maybe its because they hope to replace him with another male who gets along better with Asante, but that would be a gamble too as Asante is the one with the behavioural problems, rather than Oumbie.

I think any/most males that go to Longleat will stay there longterm, so your term 'when three leave' might well never apply! The stated plan may be to get females in the future but in reality they are still quite hard to obtain so its unlikely in the shorterm future I think. The ratio of males which will never be needed for breeding for various reasons- genetics, infertility, behavioural etc, is pretty high and there are many in Europe that come into that category too. Longleat will be serving a useful function as an additional holder of male Gorillas in the UK, as well as creating an additional asset to their own animal collection. I rather hope they just stay with males.
