Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2012

wow, very interested to read that longleat batchelor group will be made up of a few problem males! With so many males at howletts/port lympne, with good background research and testing the twycross and london will be able hopefully be able to source decent new males to establish breeding groups as succesful as bristol's.

I think with the number of male gorillas around, and the number of 'problem' males (for one of a reason), more thorough testing and selection is needed to prevent repeats of London's experiences. Genetic testing is cheaper than AI by a long way, and should really be being done routinely now!

The number os surplus males is quite high so i don;t suspect we'll see longleat establish a breeding group anytime soon - the batchelor group will perform an important function for the zoo world.

Well welll well it seems Longleat are going to ditch ALL of their gorillas when they decide to become a member of the gorilla breeding programme.Its a shame Kesho's leaving London zoo,I rather feel he belongs at that zoo...Oh well.Does anyone have an update on the lions?

Well,as it seems the majority(possibly all)the longleat new gorillas have behavioral or genetic problems,when they intend to breed in the future,they may have to bring in a new male as a

No they don't! Kesho and maybe one of the male's from Twycross do. Kesho's younger brother may have it but it's not been tested or confirmed. Oumbie from Twycross doesn't have behavioral problems or genetic problems. Kesho is infertile, Oumbie isn't and doesn't have any problems as he has bred successfully at Twycross.

They might eventually have two groups- one of males, one breeding. The males they are getting soon, or most of them, would probably not be involved in breeding anyway.

I believe the likelhood of 'Alf/Sekani' having Klineflter's Syndrome like Kesho is fairly low but presumably he can be tested. I do wonder if 'Oumbie' will really leave Twycross- he is a breeder and the Howletts' born males still have low representation in the Europe/UK population as a whole- he is in fact the only Howlett's-bred male to have bred in another UK Zoo.

Again I don't see where you are getting this from, neither oumbie or boulas have behavioural problems. I see them 2 or 3 times a month and they seem like well adjusted gorillas to me. Kesho has genetic problems, but is a good social animal. Alf presumably will have the same social skills as his brother.

I really hope that oumbie moving is unfounded speculation, but if it isn't it seems terribly unfair to say that they will shunted out later, not least because I doubt many places would take a group of males.

read on warminster web that longleat are either having or it may be a rumour but theres a mention of crocs in particular white crocs

None of the four males being discussed have behavioural problems, though Kesho and(almost certainly) Boulas are infertile males. I am surprised if Dublin are letting Alf go so soon, but maybe its to make up the numbers and he would certainly remember and get along with Kesho. Also he would have to leave at some stage anyway.

If/when these males (or some of them, or any others;)) arrive at Longleat I think it will be longterm. If they also want a breeding group at a later stage, Nico's island will presumably become vacant when he dies, and after a decent upgrade, could hold one of these two groups.

It was announced some time ago they were getting at least 1 white crocodile-its in the 2012 leaflet

Why is isis making you become a user I wanted to see how many lions there are

The ISIS database is being upgraded to the new ZIMS software. While the changeover is in progress there is no public access, but this should be back once the changeover is completed.

Am I right in saying that Kesho is leaving London? So they will be replacing him with a fourth silverback in three years?!

Yes, he is the only male at London so will be leaving London for Longleat. Your correct fourth male in three years;

Bobby arrived in 2003 and died in 2008
Yeboah arrived in 2009 died in 2010
Tiny born in October 2010 died in 2010/2011
Kesho arrived in 2010, due to move to Longleat this or next year.

Possibly candidates for the London male;
Lengai (Stuttgart) Ebobo (Budapest) one of the Beekse Burgen males or a male from a bachelor group in Austria.

Nothing has been officaly comfirmed by Longleat or ZSL regarding Kesho's future yet. The article about him being moved to Longleat wasn't from an official source, just wait and see, but that move is nowhere near certien as of now.....

I agree,i asked the question earlier whether the zsl & Twycross moves had been confirmed elsewhere,so far nothing either official or unofficial appears to have been disclosed by either Longleat or the zoos holding them.the info came from someone working on the boats who could have got it at least partly wrong!

You took the words out of my mouth Nisha. Couldn't agree more.
