Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2018

A video posted on Longleat's Facebook page shows a recently-arrived short-eared elephant-shrew that is now living in the Bat Cave nocturnal house.

How many blackbuck do Longleat still hold, and are they all female?
I went last year( I think it was) and there were five(?) females and no male.

Few UK Zoos seem to be breeding these antelope at present. Longleat and Whipsnade have only females- unless the situation at either has changed recently. West Midlands have a big herd but do not breed them anymore. Not sure of situation at Knowsley or Howletts/PL where each have sizeable herd but not sure if still breeding or not. Hoo Farm(Telford) have a pair + one young one- the last of Chester's stock. I believe Dublin(Eire) still keep them too but I don't know their number or status.

Thanks, it’s a shame that smaller antelope like blackbuck and other gazelle species aren’t successfully kept in zoos across the UK. I haven’t been to Longleat in a while and as a trip is due I was wondering if these antelope were still even present at the park! Whipsnade still only have 5 females and I don’t think they plan to get a male. I may be wrong though.

I wonder if any collections plan to acquire blackbuck, that don’t have them currently.

I believe Whipsnade still plan to add a male eventually but have no idea when, as these females have now been there about 2-3 years already. The original last male died before they could be mixed with him.

I don't foresee Blackbuck being added to other collections that don't already have them but its always a possibility. They certainly seem happier in places that have spacious paddocks as they are quite nervous.

Yes, me neither, just like other similar species such as gerenuk or springbok, shame:cool:

Maybe a good opportunity for a mixed exhibit if and when Twycross acquire Indian Rhino?

It's been 4 months since Nico the Gorilla passed away in January. all the animals including Anne the Asian Elephant are still doing so well

Great news about the new tigers, what was the reason for Shouri,Soundari and the late Svetli not breeding ? Was it over representation of bloodlines ?

Svetli, Shouri and Soundari were/are hybrids. Although it wasn't realised until Longleat had already received them

A new house is currently being built to house the new breeding pair. They're living in a temporary house at the moment until its finished. It appears that the outdoor enclosure has been split to give them a separate area to Soundari and Shouri

The new female (Yana) was born at Norden's Ark, Sweden in May 2015. Still trying to work out where the male (known as Amur) is from

Amur (the male) is from Kristiansands in Norway

So will they only be visible through a fence rather like knowsleys old tiger set up, or will they eventually rotate with the two original females

Male Amur and female Yana. Life histories?

Yana - born at Nordens Ark in May 2015. Siblings at Hamburg and Beekse Bergen

Amur - born at Kristiansands (Norway) in May 2015. Siblings at Beekse Bergen, Colchester and Dublin
