Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Safari Park News 2022

I see your point and she said why do wolves howl in the 2019 series when she visited dave and alf the old Canadian timber wolves who died last year and witnessed them howling with the European wolf neighbours

Today's episode of animal park confirmed that rio the cockatoo had left the park which explains why I didn't see him a few weeks ago animal park won't be the same without him

In Jean's defense, I do think it is a trend of modern TV for presenters to often play dumb, effectively to represent the average viewer who probably knows nothing about the topic being discussed. Personally I'd rather hear from knowledgeable people, or at the very least people who care passionately about the subject, but I accept that not everyone does. Having said that, using Megan and Hamza in the new series suggests that maybe the people that make the programme DO think this is a better approach after all!

Oh thats a shame, I guess with Becky gone it made sense to move him on. Ive not watched todays ep, will catch up tonight.

Having just watched today’s episode, I have to admit the coverage of the wolves was excellent. For a series that goes out in a morning slot (and during the school holidays) the production team weren’t afraid to shy away from the emotion and brutality of the story. It’s not often keepers will allow such coverage to be filmed, they were well within their rights to halt filming if they requested it.

I find Animal Park generally easygoing viewing, not too taxing. But sometimes it can produce some excellent pieces (re Nico’s passing, Anne’s story)

I've not really seen any episodes this summer (because of work), I'm presuming a wolf was attacked or died?

Don't spoil it :p, I am on holiday so will not be watching from Monday just passed episode onwards when I get back. But I totally agree with what you have said about the coverage on Animal Park about telling stories without being too complicated.

Out of interest, where did Longleat source their Alpha male and female wolf from, and are they a well represented bloodline? Today’s piece in Animal Park loosely alludes they may be.

Eliska (the female that recently died) was born at Highland Wildlife Park. Jango came from Jarv Zoo in Sweden. They arrived at Longleat in 2015

Highland retained Eliska's sister and also imported a male from Jarv for her. So the pair at HWP (who have bred several times) are from the same bloodlines as Longleat's stock

West Midlands have also received at least one of Eliska's siblings from HWP. So they are probably quite a well represented line by now

Part of me feels they should of intervened when Eliska started showing signs of stress or at the very least someone could of stayed with her over night.

Regardless though it was heartbreaking and Im glad they let the other wolves say goodbye.

@Kates89 the Keepers didn’t anticipate Eliska passing away. She delivered prior Litters with no issues. Wolf’s tend to give birth at night. This means the Keepers were probably overseeing the birth from home. By the time a Keeper arrived to help Eliska likely would’ve been deceased. I can guarantee the Keepers would’ve intervened if possible. The reason they are Zookeepers is that they care about animals. To the Keepers the Animals at Longleat animals no doubt feel like pets. Some Keepers probably see the Animals more than their Families.

Oh I know they adore the animals, Ive never seen more loved animals at a zoo/park.

I just thought because she was outside in labour ect it might have been more of a concern for them.

Back on subject I watched an episode of Animal Park today which covered the arrival of the Capybara. The enclosure looks very overgrown, is it on the drive through or the walk through?

They do seem a bit obsessed about the beavers though. The lions dont really seem to have been featured so far either

Just watched it and I was also impressed that it dealt frankly and well with the emotion of it but also fronted up to the questions of intervention and treatment of wild animals in captivity.

It was very sad to watch.

However it was well covered and importantly I think people will have gained a real insight into wolf society from it. For me it also underlined the sheer nastiness and the impact of the permitted hunt in early 2022 among the worlds most famous wild wolf packs in Yellowstone where park rangers were even taking part.

I would hope that a programme dealing with reality like this makes a difference in the wild and not just in how people feel about named animals in zoos.
