Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Longleat Update Please

Charlie was the male in the 1st group that you drive through which currently has 5 females. The 2nd group with 7 females was the pride which was headed by Kabir, before he left, and then his sons.

Does that mean that the famous 'Lions of Longleat' have no adult male Lions on display at present? Are new males coming?

If the three juvenille males in pride B really have left then sadly yes it does mean that Longleat's lion prides are an all girl gang. :(

The baby zebra is the first female born at the park for nearly ten years :) she has been named Kichaa meaning crazy in Swahili! Her mother is Jinga who was born at Longleat and her father is the new male Guiness that came from Fota last year.

Thats great new's about the foal being female :). Lets just hope the other future foals turn out to be be girls aswell!

You didn't get any information on where they re-housed Kabir's three remaining sons?

Kabir's son Dudley has recently arrived at Blair Drummond Safari Park, but I don't know where his brothers have gone.

Two 2 year old male lions will arrive towards the end of the year to join one of the existing prides (presumably pride B)

Longleat News

Hi all,

I have just been speaking to a neighbour who went to Longleat in Wiltshire today.
It is closed for the winter but they walk their dogs down their sometimes and they spoke to one of the wardens in his jeep and got lots of news.

Not sure how true it is but they have totally changed the Pets corner bit and a new manager is spending lots and lots of money.

They are getting Cheetah and new Gorillas in a big complex this year.
They have new lions and are getting more.

We heard that things were happening but were not sure how much.
We did think last year when we went it looked a bit tired in the safari park but the Giraffes were amazing as always.

My neighbour says the guy he spoke to also said they are having a bird of prey show and Elephants are coming back and the pets corner has loads of new animals.

We can't wait to go and have a look this year.

Anyone else know anything?

The bit about Pets Corner is correct; it's reopening February as 'the Jungle Experience' with anteaters, monkeys etc.

Everything else ('cept the bit about the gorillas and raptor show, which sound brilliant anyway) are all things I've heard that the new boss will be bringing in. If some of those are happening this year already it seems that Longleat really are going on a roll. :)

Thank you Zambar.
So will we see cheetah this year do you know? and where are the Gorillas coming from?
I cannot wait to visit in the summer.

and where are the Gorillas coming from?

Will they be building completely new accomodation for Gorillas- or just renovating the existing quarters on the Gorilla island?

If they are building new (better) accomodation the EEP might let them have some, but I doubt they would do so for the island set-up. Alternatively Longleat may have arranged something with Howletts/PL. It will be interesting to see what happens.

It would be intresting if Elephant's returned and the possibly of Cheetah's i suspect pending were The Gorilla's go i would think a small batchellor group is the most likely option.

I asked the same questions, but none were replied to, so i presume nobody knows about Kadu or Mafui really? I presume Kadu must be in her 20's now, but my bets are on that she has died of old age. As for Mafui, i presume he has died as well, but I remember watching Animal Park, and he definately had a few females with him, even when Kabir came to replace him (Kabir got Mafui's daughters, Luna and Yendi)

I know Charlie is a castrated male, but he is a fine looking specimen and in my opinion should have been bred from. I presume that he is probably related to all of the females in the pride. Age wise, I'm unsure, I would think he was offspring of the last breeding male in that pride 'Ronnie' who left to retire at Newquay Zoo in 2000? But again, not completely sure?
Charlie is not castrated . if he was castrated he would lose his mane . he is currently at Newquay

any idea where they are coming from? I'd assume one of the safari parks (e.g. Knowsley or WMSP) or from the group in Port Lympne's African experience

Knowsley only has about 6. WMSP has a few more but I suspect Port Lympne as they have a herd of nearly 30.
