Hey everyone

I am a medical student from Germany studying in Wroclaw and I would love to work on a personal research project focuses on animal behaviour in captivity versus natural environment. Im hoping to observe and document for at leat a year.I’m looking for advice on:

  1. Which two species would be ideal to focus on? I want to study a mix of social vs. solitary animals, ideally ones that show clear behavior patterns and are visually active for observation.
  2. Any tips on how to make the most of short observation windows (I’ll mostly be visiting on weekends)?
  3. General advice on working with zoo animals in an academic context (observations, ethical considerations, etc.)
To give you an idea of what I’m leaning toward, I’m considering:

  • Chimpanzees: For their social complexity and intelligence.
  • Sumatran Tigers: For their solitary behavior and conservation significance.
However, I’d love to hear if there are other animals at Wrocław Zoo that might be even more fascinating to observe.

I hope y’all can give me general input and ideas too.

This is a dream project as I initially wanted to be a biologist but that didn’t materialise and finally I took the steps to take my hobby to the next level.

Think how much time you can commit. And then contact Wroclaw Zoo staff. In the past they were very open towards zoo enthusiasts (I am not sure how it is now). Ask them what are the zoo needs and interests and try to work out something together. They can let you go behind the scenes etc. The project may turn to be very different than you imagine now, but more sensible.
