Loro Parque has announced the sudden death of Kohana, their 20 year old female killer whale. She had reportedly been under watch for an illness but passed away this week despite the teams best efforts to save her, leaving behind Keto, Tekoa, Adán, and Morgan as the only killer whales left at the park. She was the matriarch of the pod and gave birth to two calves in her life, Vicky / Victoria and Adán (both sired by Keto). She is the third killer whale to pass away at Loro Parque in just 18 months (Skyla on 11.2.2021 and Ula on 10.8.21).

Loro Parque has bred Galapagos tortoises. Photos have appeared on FB to indicate 4 hatchlings. The male Tom (50) is the father of the hatchlings. As far as I am aware the park has had 2 females (Tomasa and Ronaldinha (she came in from Wien in May 2011). The other female Tomasa had been there already for some time. First egg laying was in 2013.

Begs the question of course what species of Galapagos tortoise breeding male Tom is assigned. Furthermore, the question whether both Tomasa and Ronaldinha are actually pure-bred Galapagos tortoise of unknown Island population or not (in the latter case just hybrids).

The park claims this enclosure will house “the largest coral reef outside the oceans.” The new facility combines cutting-edge visual technology with an enormous explosion of life, with more than 8,000 corals and almost 10,000 fish in more than 260,000 liters of water.
Coral Kingdom is conceived as a sensory immersion on the seabed. A trip in which the beauty of the largest reef outside the ocean that exists is displayed in all its splendor. Loro Parque has opened the doors to this new space, in which virtual reality and nature will come together to create a unique experience for the visitor. This reef is also an opportunity to collaborate in the preservation of corals, deeply threatened with extinction. Its window, almost 40 meters long, is formed by a continuous glass of perfect transparency, with a serpentine layout that contributes to the creation of a sensation of movement and fluidity in the viewer. A complexity that makes it the largest in the world of these characteristics.
The exhibit houses more than 8,000 corals of more than 70 different species and about 10,000 fish – clown, surgeon, butterfly, damselfish…. Coral Kingdom is a complete ecosystem that reproduces the reefs of the great barley coral of the Indo-Pacific in more than 260,000 liters of water.
This new exhibit is located by the lions and meerkats. The park's youtube channel has a good series of videos explaining the process this new aquarium has had.

It is only 3 times as small as the living coral reef in Burgers' Zoo in terms of volume (or Steinhart and not to speak of Townsville...). But I guess that the long viewing window and an exaggarated number of fish is enough for the marketing department to make dubious claims :p. It is a neat-looking exhibit though...

A new species has arrived at La Vera in 2024: Neophema petrophila . They have already successfully bred. The birds came originally from Priam.
