That's not a big space is it? Where was it previously? I thought there was a giant anteater exhibit by the Maned Wolves, but I could very well be misremembering.

It's not that big of a space, and there was not a giant anteater on display in the zoo yet when you visited. You may be thinking of the auxiliary giant otter exhibit next to the maned wolf?

Ah, that's right. Thanks for that. So this is a new species for the zoo then?

Blackduiker told me that they had them many years ago, but it is the first time that giant anteater has been at the LA Zoo for decades.

Recently announced was the first birth in the Rainforest of the Americas; a baby black howler monkey. No word on the sex yet but there should be more news coming shortly. Possibly one of our fellow ZooChatters can share more info with us? I hope to visit soon, health permitting.

Great news to hear. The zoo posted about it on Facebook on October 5th, so it must have been born in late September or early October. Also, hope your health gets better BlackDuiker.

Thank you for the concern. The problem I've been dealing with for years are 3 bulging disks. On next Friday I'll be receiving a lumbar epidural. But on to better news. On this past Monday I visited my beloved Los Angeles Zoo after a doctor's appointment. My first visit since July. And maybe 30 minutes after my arrival, who do I run into? None other than my good friend David Brown! We then proceeded to walk the grounds together for about the next 2 hours, discussing the future of our zoo, especially while surveying the future Jaguar habitat construction site. We were impressed by the size and it's potential, after which David had to leave to pick up his wife from work. It was a great unexpected zoo hookup! I continued on for another 30 minutes or so.

Here are a couple of recent photos of the new baby howler monkey, courtesy of the LA Zoo's Facebook page:
