The Release of the January 2015 Zoo Commission Minutes

Some highlights include:

The Jaguar habitat was 90% complete and completion was expected by
the end of the month

Red Ape Rain Forest mesh replacement has begun and should take approximately 5 weeks

Tufted Deer are being transferred out of the collection, their hillside habitat will be the new home for Visayan Warty Pigs

Adjustments are being made for the arrival of Tasmanian Devils at the end of the year

Good to see more Tasmanian Devils coming to USA (I know another Midwest zoo is getting them too).

Do any of you out there have photos of the new jaguar exhibit? Or is the construction site completely blocked from public view?

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to visit that side of the zoo when I'm volunteering. Hopefully next time I'm at the zoo I'll try to take a photo.
 
I just posted 4 photos of the new jaguar exhibit over in the gallery — it looks pretty close to being open at this point. It's right at the back end of the Rainforest of the Americas trail, which is a little bit of a ghost town right now. I can't wait to see those jaguars have some room to stretch and explore — the one in the nearby roundabout exhibit always seems to be circling a well worn path when I'm there.
 
BeardsleyZooFan, I just saw him for the first time and posted a photo over on the gallery — he's got some really stunning eyes!
 
According to the LA Zoo Twitter account the Australia House reopened over the weekend — having never been there when it was originally open, I'm curious as to why it was closed and what was housed in there previously. Any ideas? Photos? Thanks.

It was originally a nocturnal house for the zoo's koalas. It was opened in the early 1980s. It had koalas, echidnas, and bettongs in it. The zoo's koalas all died out and the house closed. When the zoo got a new collection of koalas from Australia, they decided that keeping them outdoors in fresh air and sunlight was better than keeping them indoors in nocturnal conditions.

The building was then used for a temporary exhibit of robo-dinosaurs and then a temporary spider exhibit (2007). For the last few years apparently there has been a wombat in there, but only now has it reopened after many years of being closed to the public.
 
Thanks DavidBrown — looks like I have a reason to get back there soon. It was always odd encountering that dead end with a big, seemingly empty building at the end.

Is there anyway we an get a report on whats in there with its reopening? :)

And a single Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby.

The house is divided into two large fairly open enclosures. The first exhibit upon entering has Sugar Gliders and the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. The second exhibit has Sugar Gliders, Brush-tailed Bettongs, Echidnas, and the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby. I was at the zoo yesterday and all the animals were active and very visible the two times I visited the house.

As for the Tasmanian Devils go, the yard is currently getting divided into two enclosures.

Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so I wasn't able to take any photos.
 
The Cincinnati Zoo has publicly confirmed that Harapan the Sumatran rhinoceros will be leaving for the Los Angeles Zoo (and, from there, eventually on to Sumatra) in the impending future. No date has been set as of yet, but the move is coming.
