@Kifaru Bwana: Can't say right now exactly what happened. Perhaps it was meant to be *July* 24 and it was recorded incorrectly in the minutes as June.

The website was never updated, which led me to believe that the meeting was never actually going to take place that day. I check the site regularly, so if there is an update I will share it.
 
Interesting the zoo got another elderly female elephant. Is it safe to assume Billy isn't recommended for breeding? Or are they just avoiding the controversy?

I would think it has more to do with the fact that it's already a facility with elderly elephants so this new elephant will be around others her age as well as staff that specialize in their care.

One of the articles I read said this exactly. It's best for Shaunzi's welfare and was offered by Fresno-Chaffee, and Los Angeles has a huge elephant exhibit with social opportunities for her. This should probably not be taken as any sort of statement on Billy's ability to breed.

would the LA Zoo seriously be calling them "flying mice"? I have never heard of that name being used before, but I googled it in combination with the scientific name and it actually is used on various sites. I'm disappointed that such an idiotic name would be being used by the zoo though.
 
Sadly that's the name used for them on ISIS in the past. Not sure about currently though.

I've never seen that name in use at the zoo or anywhere else. They don't have a "flying mouse" exhibit. The sugar gliders in the Australia House are clearly labeled as sugar gliders.

Every zoo I’ve been to that has that species calls them Feathertail Gliders I have never heard them called that either :/
 
From what I've seen in the past and recently with the meeting minutes and animal transaction records is that they are using the names that were used or are being used on ZIMS/ISIS. LIke for the Francois Langurs it sometimes says Delacour Langur, for Coquerel's Sifaka they write verreaux's sifaka, and for Red River Hogs they write Bushpig. There are several others I've noticed in the past. Maybe that's the case with the Feathertail Gliders.

Most of the examples you give are based on (very) outdated taxonomy, that won't be the case with the gliders...

1.0 = 1 male

0.1 = 1 female

0.0.1 = 1 unknown sex

So 1 female koala died.

I believe i'm correct, but someone let me know if i'm wrong.
 
Couple of updates from my (short) visit today:

The north American river otter exhibit has been slightly remodeled and filled with Scarlet Ibisies.

The new Addax group is in the enclosure formerly occupied by the Anoa. No clue yet where they went.

There are a couple of new orangutans, including a younger male. Is Bruno still around? I know he's a hybrid, but he's been one of the flagship animals at the zoo for years. I didn't see anything on the zoo transactions.
