2000 Southern mountain yellow-legged frogs hatched :

"We're proud to announce that over 2,000 endangered Southern mountain yellow-legged frog tadpoles have recently hatched at the L.A. Zoo. This species is native to the San Gabriel Mountains, and the tadpoles are the offspring of two groups of adult frogs we took into our care in 2014 when we were tasked to create an insurance colony for this species on the brink of extinction.

“When we learned there was a species of amphibian in our own back yard that was in danger of becoming extinct, we joined forces with several local and federal organizations to create an insurance colony that could be reproduced and whose offspring could one day be returned to the wild,” said Ian Recchio, Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians at the Los Angeles Zoo. “Based on our past experiences with sensitive amphibian species, we were confident we could raise their numbers. This endangered species of frog is only found in Southern California, so we felt a responsibility to help before it’s too late.”

Ocelot kittens now have access to main exhibit, though they can still retreat to indoor den (where at this point they are spending most of their time).

I plan on visiting the zoo on Sunday. I know an Indian Rhino from the zoo passed away last year, so does the zoo have any rhinos left?

They didn't announce anything about a new rhino, plus they wiped the rhino off the map. I doubt we'll see them again until the master plan is put in place.

There aren't any rhinos left at the zoo. As Wyman says, there are plans for rhinos in the new master plan that is being finalized. There will likely be an African rhino species in a new Africa zone (possibly white rhino in a multi-species savanna) and possibly Indian rhinos in a revamped Asia zone by the elephant exhibit. Those exhibits are at least several years away probably, and until there are concrete plans and funding in place they are theoretical.

Your options for seeing rhinos in Southern California are now (as of summer 2018) Indian rhinos at the San Diego Zoo; Indian, white, and black rhinos at the San Diego Safari Park (and you have to do a behind-the-scenes tour to see Indian rhinos); and Indian and white rhinos at Fresno Zoo (more Central than Southern California).

When did the Rhino die? I visited LA in late December and I definitely remember seeing a Rhinoceros.

It was Nov. 7th 2017 so you must be off on your dates.

Oh well. I hope to visit the safari park later in the year, oncre they get the platypus exhibit. I did the San Diego zoo last January. I don't know when I'll get to Fresno, that could be tough.

Thanks for all your help.:)

What's the calf who was born last years name? Also where do Mark and Leo reside today?
I believe that her name is Saba, which means 7 in Swahili although I have heard keepers calling her Slurpee because she was born on 7/11. Have no idea where the older boys are right now. The 2015 female calf seems to be gone as well.

According to a species holding report. It says Los Angeles had 1.5, it also said it had two births within the last year, so I assume it’s recent. I was thinking the giraffes were maybe Phillip, Hasina, Zainabu, Sofie, Slurpee, and Saba?

I am pretty sure Slurpee and Saba are the same calf. I think the 1.5 included the new calf born in May this year. Again, not sure when the report was last updated.

My apologies, made a mistake on the previous post; I meant to say that the 2016 Hasina's calf was recently moved to another facility, possibly a non-AZA one. Her name is probably Kiangi (not sure about spelling, just sounding it out.)

Oh my bad, I thought you meant the recent calf was named saba. And kianga was relocated to the Louisville zoo.
