Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2021

Couple interesting things there.
3.0 excess Paca?
And wow a lot of Mangrove Pit Viper being shipped around! I'm guessing younger animals.
Wonder what exactly they sent Sacramento, that was very vague... some "bearded lizard" and "gecko"? Bearded Dragon? Beaded Lizard misspell? And who knows on the gecko.

Don’t forget the saurus Crane are in excess as well.
But yeah if my math is correct that is 14 snakes so it must of been a new clutch of eggs born recently.
Of course another goral birth is great.
And I am very happy Catalina species are being sent out of California.

Seems LA Zoo is just about to complete a huge transfer of surplus mangrove pit vipers across several new US facilities!!!!
Europe too with the Armenian ones. They've had incredible success breeding vipers in general.

LA's herp department produces an impressive number of offspring in general, as they've also bred and shipped out several Gray's monitors and batches of tree frogs.

They’re definitely one of the best in the country when it comes to their herps! A DVM I worked for interned there for a bit and spoke in high regard about their breeding efforts :)

The July Animal Transactions referenced up thread mentioned 1 meerkat pup was born in June, but I saw 3 in the exhibit on Saturday.

Also there is a spotted thick knee chick in the mixed bird species enclosure with the weavers and golden breasted starling.

Great to see the koalas coming back hopefully soon! The Currasow chick is growing up so fast that it looks like the parents, some great births in this listing :)

Some bad news with regard to the koalas. The Animal Transactions notes a male koala would be coming from Zoo Miami. Sadly Zoo Miami announced their young male named Hope was found deceased on Sunday night, August 22. Presumably he was the male who was supposed to move to LA from there.

ZOO MIAMI MOURNS THE LOSS OF “HOPE,” THE KOALA

Does the zoo not currently have any koalas? I thought they were just off-exhibit

I believe they only have one left, Edmund, but he doesn't like to be outside on exhibit. Karri, who had previously been in the exhibit, passed away in May.

I wonder if the koalas are still inbound since the one male coming from Zoo Miami may have been the one that recently passed away, as noted on the article up in this thread :/

Also with how restricted the LA Zoo is with its COVID protocols, it makes me think as to how much the Vision Plan phases will be affected… I know Master Plans change all the time but still has me worried yet hopeful for the future.

I'm hopeful the female koala from Cleveland will still come. If it's the younger female Maya, her mother, Mackenzie, was born at the LA Zoo. Presumably the SSP would want to leave the parents in Cleveland to breed again and will find a new male to be paired with their daughter once she gets to LA.
