Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2022

Ah right, you meant LA Zoo without much in pachyderms? When is the hippo move supposed to happen and what will replace them in their current location (better stlll what are they planning for the site)? What about plans for the pachyderm group at LA Zoo within the new masterplan (when will it go LIVE even ....)?

Honolulu Zoo have the space for pair and breeding then (except for a dysfunctional elephant breeding area)?

Conversely, I would personally - off topic here admittedly - favour that the Honolulu Zoo would also export their male black rhino so he might still go on to breed on the North American main continent. They have been totally ineffectual over the entire time they kept a very valuable black rhino breeding pair. Perhaps they could take on one of the other species (either white or Indian).
Satsuki the black rhino passed away in December at 27 years old. Their one surviving male rhino, Corky, is 36 years old and should NOT breed or get transferred, as he is likely in the final years, if not months of his long lifetime.

I have assumed male Corky still has some years still in him. While at 36 he is probably at the higher end of the scale for bull black rhino, he most certainly is not the oldest male rhino in terms of longevity. I would like to point out though that at Columbus Zoo male black rhino Clyde (wildborn in 1951) was aged 49 when he passed on December 18, 2000. Further, Corky at 36 does and did have a breeding recommendation with Satsuki right up to the moment his mate had died. Even though, they thought there was a slim chance given his age.

At that particular age perhaps a move may not be the best option. However given his ancestry though I would hope his genetics do get preserved and he gets the opportunity to breed yet.

It is sad though to have to put on the record that this planned pairing never prospered as had been hoped for with both individuals genetically valuable to the US population. Corky was born at Chicago Brookfield in December, 11, 1986 and had a stint at Caldwell Zoo from 1988 before being shipped to Honolulu Zoo in 1999.

BTW: Satsuki was born May 16, 1995 and died December 13, 2021, so her age at passing was 26.

ADMIN: Please have this discourse transferred to the Honolulu Zoo news thread. Not really relevant and bit off-topic here in LA Zoo thread.

Wow, I had just visited the LA zoo on a visit to California two weeks ago and saw Mara. She was peacefully sleeping after being fed or cleaned behind the scenes.

I do genuinely hope LA get hippos again. They were one of the zoo’s greatest attractions and there’s no real reason why they shouldn’t return. The sudden death of Adhama really complicated things for LA, leaving them without a bull male. But I do believe, all they really need is a new, updated enclosure and a new start, with new hippos.

Adhama passed away in Dallas, as he was moved there to breed. He posthumously became a father there.

I believe hippos are in the LA Zoo Master Plan, but I'm sure it'll be many years before any new exhibit is built for them.

I believe based on the way the phases they plan to work on, it may not be until late 2020’s or early 2030’s when the Africa section is proposed to be done by. It’s quite a while but it’s for the better to make proper homes for the hippos as well as many other animals :)

Thanks for the update, Grey. A little somber. Between the hippos moving, Ranger passing, and Bruno a month ago, the lions (heck, even Randa right before the pandemic) it feels like the zoo has lost so many of its most iconic animals

Hello everyone. I'll be traveling to California in April from Spain and I'll visit several zoos, including Los Angeles Zoo. I've some doubts, but the main one is about possible closed cexhibitions by the Covid. I've looked on the zoo's website and Isee that the Australian House is closed. When is it expected to be open? Are there any important animals there? I'm especially interested in wombats. Are there any more closed facilities? Thank you :)

The wombats are the only animals in the Australia House last I knew. It has been closed during the pandemic. It might still be closed in April. The LAIR reptile house would be the other closed facility if the pandemic reignites. The Australia House and the LAIR are the only indoor facilities at the zoo.

Some of the primate exhibits were roped off also when I was there last a few months ago, like the mandrills and the sifakas - you could still see them, but only from a distance,

Wombats don't have outdoor exhibit? Are the LAIR closed now or It would be closed only if the pandemic's situation changed?

The wombats do not have an outdoor exhibit. For knowing what is open or not I recommend keeping watch on the zoo's website and social media, as they are very good at keeping people up to date on what is open and not and what requirements are for visitors. You can contact the zoo directly over Facebook.
