The Australia House has finally reopened. Also, the roundhouse in South America with the spider monkeys, crested capuchins and howler monkeys is no longer roped off. The upper viewing area at the giant river otter exhibit in Rainforest of the Americas is also accessible again.

I think I’ll make a visit this coming week then, I’ve been waiting for all of it to reopen!

Yes, the aviaries are still closed and a handful of other birds are also off exhibit. The ones I noticed off exhibit were the harpy eagles and the African pygmy falcons. Most of the flamingos seemed to be on exhibit, however, I didn't see any ambassador flamingos in the smaller space to the right.

Most of the COVID-19 restrictions on exhibit access/viewing are gone. The ones I still noticed in place were the chain across the front of the snow leopard exhibit and a barrier up to keep people back from part of the fence area (the fenced part closest to the glass) at orangutans.

Hi all. I’ll be visiting the LA zoo monday - what are the rarities I need to look out for? Thanks in advance.
 
The foot bridge by the langur and markhor exhibits is closed to all traffic. The area under the bridge has red tape surrounding it that says: "Danger Hazardous Area Keep Out". It looks like it's structurally unsound and needs to be repaired or replaced.

I was there on Monday and that was not the case then - I wonder if there has been an incident.

Some issue must've been discovered during the week. I could see a reasonably sized gap above one of the columns underneath, but I have no idea if that has anything to do with the danger.
 
Very sad animal news to pass along that was shared with me by an employee. Bajen (donor name "Fred") the male snow leopard passed away on November 20. He was only 10 1/2 years old (born on June 14, 2012 at Rosamond Gifford Zoo) and fathered 2 cubs in May 2017: female Marai at Woodland Park Zoo and male Meru at Louisville Zoo.

I was also able to confirm that the bridge by the langur and markhor exhibits was found to be structurally unsound during a recent inspection. The employee I asked didn't have details as far as when it will be repaired.

Koretz has been trying to remove Billy from the zoo for years, he's in the AR camp. My understanding is he's due to leave office and this was a last push with influence, as indicated by his comment "the zoo has successfully waited me out til now." Personally I think it is rubbish and I'd like to know who their elephant experts are. The LA Zoo is a far better and safer home for Billy than any of the elephant sanctuaries.

I find it laughable that Paul Koretz, who was a head of this motion, has something to say about animal welfare. The underfunding of staff and conditions animals are coming out of LA animal shelters should be more than enough to make his opinion worthless. Having first hand experience of what comes out from those shelters, I’m still surprised Koretz got this far until recently.
