Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Los Angeles Zoo News 2025

like how update the habbitat? Or move them to the old elephant exhibit?
Wouldn't it make more sense to just put Marshall the Indian rhino in Elephants of Asia? Phoenix' old elephant complex has two Indian rhinos (last I heard they had plans to obtain two more), and it could be a decent use of the space in the meantime. Visayan warty pigs would make incredible use of Marshall's current yards in the meantime. Even based on the wording of the FAQs regarding Billy/Tina's move and the future of elephants at the LA Zoo, I am more cautious than optimistic...

Gaur or banteng would also be incredible in the meantime, and both have been successfully mixed with Indian rhino in the past (and worst comes to worst there are multiple yards for easy separation). Malayan tapir could also be a fun addition!

I got word from staff that the Visyan Warty Pigs would be moved to the old Anoa Habitat.

that's true and hopefully they can bring back Camels and prezwalki's Horses to rotate with rhino and gaur
But it isn’t… this is just speculation on what could happen. Likely, the elephant habitat will be made for Indian Rhinos; and likely just that.

wait if they move the Tuffed deer to the old crane exhibit and the warty pig to old anoa exhibit what does that mean for there old exhibits what will they fill it in with?
my guess
Takin
Bactrian Camel

Aren't they a bit too small in space for them alongside the former Calmian Deer Habitat?

Also the Takins are fine where they live.

Based on Facebook, the Play Park is re-opened after Renovations and Zoolights starts november 13th.

Wonder how this will proceed with the departure of GLAZA? Other than that if this means master plans can proceed, this is much needed great news! I personally hope for a new or renovated improvement for the giraffes, and a return of lions would be nice as well.

does that mean a new master plan?

The Los Angeles City Council approved a settlement to modify an expansion plan for the LA Zoo after environmental advocates sued the city in connection with the Vision Plan:

City Council Approves LA Zoo Expansion Settlement - MyNewsLA.com
From the wording it sounds like the old plan may be alive in some form. According to the settlement the city has agreed to replace the California Vistors Center with shade structures and bathrooms, and the zoo agreed to preserve atleast 5 of the 16 acres initially marked for development. From those agreements we know the zoo is planning to expand and at the very least build the outdoor viewing area, at most, the entire California area (-visitors center and canyon).

Nice to know where the cranes went. Zoo also seemed to have moved a few giraffes off. What got me was the sand foxes sent to the West Texas Wildlife Preserve in Merkel, this means the species are phase out of the zoo?
A lot of times when you see “Donation to X — transaction eliminates an unnecessary loan”, it usually means said animal was already at that facility — it is the actual ownership of the animal that is changing hands.

That said, this does, indeed, mean that the sand foxes have been sent away.
