Louisville Zoo Louisville Zoo 2012-2016

Campaign Goals | Louisville Zoo

Various links to renovated and new exhibits along with a blog with recent (Sept.) photos of progress. According to bronxzoofans elephant exhibit sizing, the yard was .25 acres. The new plan aims to double the size of the yard along with some gimmick-type elephant encounter structure.

In my humble opinion I feel the elephant renovation is on way too small a scale to be worthwhile. The yard will still be only half an acre, not particularly naturalistic and sterile. Louisville has built state-of-the-art exhibits for gorillas and polar bears but elephants are only getting a minimal overhaul. This might just be me but I feel zoos should really go for it if they're going to exhibit elephants. Otherwise, phasing out seems like the best option. Dozens of zoos across the country have built excellent elephant exhibits to maintain strong programs with the species but Louisville doesn't appear to be doing so.

I read conflicting information while researching the zoo's new penguin habitat. One article said the penguins were coming from Australia, while another said they'd be coming from the Bronz Zoo. Actually, both were true. The eight penguins were imported from Australia and already are at the Bronx Zoo.
Edit: I emailed the zoo to find this out.
