Kentucky is famous for Bourbon:

Bourbon is a type of American whiskey, a barrel-aged distilled liquor made primarily from corn. The name derives from the French Bourbon dynasty, although the precise inspiration is uncertain; contenders include Bourbon County in Kentucky and Bourbon Street in New Orleans, both of which are named after the dynasty.

The water in Kentucky is hard — meaning, it has a high pH and a high proportion of minerals, including calcium and magnesium. These elements are optimal for distilling.

So the zoo is going to have to spin an educational graphic about how bourbon production impacts wildlife? And why they’re serving hard liquor around kids?

No idea. I've seen zoo exhibits sponsored by oil companies before, so I'm guessing institutions take what they can get funding-wise.

As for hard liquor around kids, I wouldn't worry much. As a native Kentuckian and resident of the Bourbon Trail, I can attest that Bourbon isn't generally a variety of drink that people consume in large quantities. It's expensive, has a high demand, and sustains a massive collector's market. It's more common here for people to collect bourbons that they never even intend to drink than you might think.

If someone plans to go to the zoo and get soused, it's likely going to be a remarkably expensive day for them.

I've seen other zoos with wine before. One AZA accredited zoo is straight up named after a beer company. This isn't really new lol. A bit odd to highlight it, but not a danger to public safety.

Are you referring to Busch Gardens? They're named after the same person, not named after the company. They also aren't affiliated with the company now.

Louisville Zoo mourns death of world’s second oldest gorilla

Helen, also named the “Grand Dame” of the gorilla world, came to the Louisville Zoo in 2002 from Lincoln Park Zoo.

Since she was wild born in West Africa, her birth year was estimated as 1958.

Zoo caregivers made the decision to euthanize Helen Friday morning. She was 64 years old.

Fatou, a gorilla at Zoo Berlin is currently 65 years old.
