Munster Gorillas.

From Flickr;

New female 'Sakina' from Jersey has had to be temporarily seperated from the group due to fighting with the male 'N'Kwango.' As she is ten years older than him (aged 25 now), it may take a while for them to accept each other.

Jersey arrival.

12 year old male Badongo(Yaounde x Virunga) has arrived at Jersey from Vallee de Singes, Romagne in France to replace the previous male Ya Kwanza. Ya Kwanza has gone to Vallee de Singes to form a new male group with four younger males, which will later transfer to another Zoo(Amneville?)

Badongo is on show at Jersey but won't have access to the females for several days yet.

So Grace has not been pregnant at all?

I was a bit surprised to see it posted on here that she was, as I believe she is not well socialised in their group (from her earlier background).

According to another zoochat member Badongo had met some females in the morning but then was later on his own.

He is probably having contact with the females for part of the day only to start with, gradually increasing the number of hours per day they are together. That's the usual way introductions are done with Gorillas- though sometimes zoos choose a quicker route if they all seem happy with it.

Moja (born in December 2004 in Prague; Richard x Kijivu) is going to move from Prague to Cabarceno in October to join 1.2 group there.

Basel

Just the indoor area. The outdoor enclosures will be ready in 2012.

I saw recent photos on Flickr of the Basel Gorillas since they returned to the Zoo, and which also shows the renovated indoor enclosure(s). It appears only one of the three indoor enclosures(the righthand one) used by the Gorilla group is changed- now about double its original depth, maybe more, with new concrete branches and woodchip floor, which they apparently don't like walking on yet as its a new surface for them! The mesh and planted backdrop is similar to the old design. So it seems the Gorillas now have 'L' shaped indoor exhibition cages.(two old, one new.)

Does anyone know if similar changes were made to the Chimp and Orangutan indoor housing, or only the Gorillas?

Outdoor design plans show five large outdoor 'cages' but I cannot tell from them how many cages are for which groups. Their construction is in the early stages still. It will be good to see all these Apes in proper outdoor enclosures after so long.

Individual animals- I have seen no photos of 'Goma' for some years- the first-born Basel gorilla (and 2nd zoo born worldwide), she will have reached the great age of 52 on 23rd of this month(September)-previously always plump, she looks much thinner and rather 'shrunken' now with a thinning coat of hair. Her younger sister 'Quarta' is still a strikingly handsome female though, resembling her father 'Stefi' or her brother 'Migger'- as does her (Quarta's) own daughter 'Faddama'. Quarta is a blackish-coloured female whereas Faddama has shorter, greyer-coloured hair and is apparently the largest female. These three, Goma, Quarta and Faddama are now the only gorillas in Basel's current group of six which are descended from their original breeding, though the Basel line is carried on in many other zoos in Europe and elsewhere too.

Mambele/Josy has been transferred from Hannover Zoo to Antwerp Zoo on 22 August 2011 to live with Kumba (infertile) and two Eastern Lowland Gorilla females - Amahoro and Victoria. Let's hope this is a temporary measure.......

That means the 'big five' have now become four.. Boumi was also one of four full-brothers(Bitam x Mouila) - Boulas & Oumbi(both at Twycross) Boumi and Timbou (who lives seperately from the others) at Port Lympne.

She is from their breeding group, rather than the nursery.

A good move as Frankfurt are currently down to just three females and one of those(Jule) is too old to breed nowadays.
