Banga

Hello everybody I am wandering if anybody knows how is banga in la vallee dels singes i used yo visit her al Madrid but Now is quite away from home!
Thank you

I am very sad to hear Kumba passed away. I looked at the Chessington Zoo facebook profile and saw Kumba's profile had been "mysteriously" taken down. The keepers must understandably be very upset.

Bosso (41) died in Zlin-Lesna. He was the last gorilla at the zoo and Zlin doesn´t plan to bring in any new gorillas.

From UK Durrell thread- 'Bahasha' at Jersey zoo has had a baby. This is her first birth at age 18, probably because the previous male Ya Kwanza did not mate with her.

'Bahasha' came to Jersey from Melbourne Zoo where she was born(father Motaba, mother Betsy). Her older brother 'Buzandi' is the breeding male in Hanover Zoo. This baby will be a great grandchild of Jersey's famous 'Jambo'.

- Bahasha's baby (Jersey Zoo) died on April 14th 2013.

- Kwimba (Howletts Wild Animal Park) was moved to Givskud Zoo.

Wow Willard,

Thank you so much for posting this, I would love to hear a commentary on what is going on, the gorillas history, has the birth just happened, how long the unbiblical cord remains attached to mother and baby, thoughts on why the mother is tasting or ?? The fluids.

This video has been shot during the time after she has passed the placenta but has not yet severed the umbilical cord. She's a first time mother so it might take her time to figure that bit out, or they may need to do it for her if she doesn't do it herself. The fingering and licking of birth fluids is an aftermath of the birth. like all mammals, they are attractive to her which ensures she cleans the infant properly.

The other female showing interest is probably the other young female Chelewa, who lost her first baby here about a year ago after a few days when it died of injuries, possibly sustained from mishandling by its inexperienced mother. Interesting that Moja lets her touch the baby.

Lets hope this baby does better- the father is a wildcaught male with no other offspring.

Thx Pertinax,

Was hoping u would respond.

I'm wondering if this is a 'one way' deal, or might they be receiving one in return e.g. a young unrelated Givskud male(e.g. Kipenzi, 11 years) for their 'Kijo' group, which still has no fresh male?

To date, since breeding started, Howletts have never received a male from outside their own collections, only females.

And what about Djala? Maybe there is one other male arriving after the start of the breeding results.
