Nice birthday-present for Burger's Zoo - 100 years young this year : Gorilla Nimba got her second young today. Even more exiting, 3 other females are pregnant as well !

The baby born to Kabinda at Beauval is now confirmed as another female and was given the name Mayele

Munich

According to regular zoo visitor Brigitte Tos Bagira's baby is a boy and was named Nikita.

Munich baby

Correction: This Friday I talked to a senior keeper, and neither is it sure that the baby is a boy, nor have they chosen any name yet. Sorry for the apparent mis-information.

Very good news!:) Poor 'Muna' never had a baby before because the previous male partner was no good, which is why she is 24 at this first birth.

Is she looking after it well?

Prague Zoo gorillas are fine but stuck upstairs in their pavilion. The flooding was much worse than imagined yesterday afternoon. Richard, Kamba, Kiburi, Kijivu, Nuru and Shinda are very stressed but will be evacuated to another zoo in the Czech Republic. Prague zoo is seeking donations. The damage will cost 10s of millions.

Perhaps here on ZooChat we can do our bit too?

The other zoo that will take the gorillas not by any chance Dvur Kralove? :)

Yes. Prague Zoo is accepting donations.

I know its too early to make any predictions really, and its good that the Gorillas have been saved successfully by the forward planning of the tower/upstairs room. But is it likely they may reisite the Gorilla House on the higher part of the Zoo in the future?. This risk to flooding seems uncceptable for them longterm.

A Gorilla update from Howletts Facebook:

Update by Brian Hammer, Deputy Head Gorilla Keeper, Howletts – May 2013

A charismatic silverback, Kouillou isn’t short on personality and is well known for his Jekyll and Hyde duality of charm and mischief. While he takes on his tough guy role for much of the time, his softer side can be seen when he plays gently with his infants. A Congolese orphan, Kouillou was born in the dense tropical rainforests of northern Congo in the early 1980's before being captured by hunters for eventual sale to a dealer in the Republic of Congo's capital city of Brazzaville. Fortunately, Kouillou was rescued and in 1987, when he was 2 or 3 years old, he was transferred to Howletts to join our breeding program for this critically endangered species. Despite his undoubtedly traumatic start to life, he has grown into a charming adult who is mellowing with age.

In our last update we reported Kouillou's eye problems. It was noted after we saw him feeling around for food with the back of his hand rather than looking with his eyes. Keepers noticed he has white dots in his eyes and they appear to have got a little larger. We are monitoring this closely and will decide how to deal with this if his eyesight continues to decline. Other than his sight, he is really starting to mellow as time goes by and is really quite relaxed. There may be some changes to his group soon as son Otty may be moving to Melbourne for breeding purposes - he has come to the age when he needs to move on. Daughters Kwimba (who is in a different group) and Mah Mah will also be moving on to benefit the international breeding programme - we will keep you up to date on these moves.

Seems like Koulliou has cataracts then.

Interesting they say not only the son 'Otty' but two of his daughters will be moving elsewhere also. More females are certainly leaving these groups nowadays than previously.

I read today that Prague gorillas will not be relocated to Dvur Kralove as previously reported, but will in fact remain at Prague. Operations to relocate the gorilla enclosure on higher ground at Prague is underway. And donations are welcomed.
