Lowland Gorillas in Europe 2015

The zoo has published two videos of the introduction and integration of newly arrived female Maisha. This is great stuff for anyone interested in social behaviour under such exceptional circumstances. While the article is in French, the embedded videos speak for themselves. - Intégration réussie pour Maïsha | Zoo de la Palmyre

There is also an English translation available to the article and English subtitles to the videos too.

These are really excellent videos and the park is to be congratulated on publicising such fascinating behaviour which usually takes place behind closed doors.

Despite his desocialised background, male Nyuki seems to be handling his group situation very well so far.

Tierpark Berlin

A member asked me about the gorillas who lived at Tierpark Berlin (not to be confused with Zoo Berlin) so I made a chart.

Effie at ZSL London Zoo has given birth

Thank you Willard :)

Noah's Ark Gorilla show! I had not heard of this, fascinating reading, however can't seem to find allot about it. Do you know much about it?

Thank you! - All I know about it is from the internet. In the description of the chart I link to the articles I've cited from. From afar, it's hard to tell what the show and later the farm were really like, but according to an insider (who met Mae Noell) they were abusing their animals, and if only inadvertently.

I'm afraid though the moderator might complain about us discussing American gorillas here. ;)

Hi Willard,
Thank you for the information on the Zoom gorillas ;)

Noah's Ark Gorilla show!

It was actually 'Noell's Ark'- a pun on the owners' name. The male Gorilla 'Tommy' was chained at the wrist in the photos- he was obviously very humanised but almost completely hairless, presumably from self-plucking indicating the very bad/stressful conditions they were kept in.

Ahh thanks P

Apenheul death.

Female Lobo died at Apenheul on 3rd December aged 42. This leaves only Mintha and Mandji from their original founder group.

Another death sadly..female "LOMELA" at Wuppertal [GER].she was 43yo and never had any offspring.

KWIMBA

Does anyone know where KWIMBA lives now? She was born at Howletts in 1997. The official 2014 studbook says Howletts, and so does Gorillas Land, but the inofficial studbook by Jim Davis says Givskud in Denmark. In a previous version of my family tree for Givskud I had her in as well, but not in the one for 2015. So maybe she was there and has moved or died since, which doesn't explain though why she is still listed as at Howletts in the studbook. To add to my confusion, in the previous thread here on ZooChat, Gorillas Land posted a note about her transfer to Givskud.

I suppose Kwimba is still in Howletts.
They were about two inch close to moving her to Givskud back then, but Samson got health problems, and they decided to postpone it. So far, it was documented on Samson's facebook page (now closed after his death).
I think I picked up somewhere thoughts about still moving her for one of Samson's sons, so maybe there are re-negotiations?

As Howletts recently got new (unrelated) male Matadi from Paignton's group I think maybe any plan to get one of Samson's sons will not happen now, as all the breeding enclosures at Howletts will again be filled.

Hi Willard,

Kwimba is still at Howletts in Djanghous group, she was meant to go to Givskud but it never happened and instead Tamidol from Djanghous went to Gaia in the Netherlands and has since had a baby sired by Makula.

Gernot

 they named Effie's baby "Gernot" ?!?
Thank the gods it's a gorilla, else he would be mobbed in school.

While Dublin renamed Horst to Harry, and Claudia to Kafi, London now comes up with a truly teutonic name. ;) Anyway, it's quite a strange choice. A sponsor maybe who got to name him?

In Austria you won't be mobbed for the name Gernot, but you would be for Kevin - which was a very popular name about 10 to 15 years ago, mostly among (to put it politely) the working class. Nothing wrong with blue collars but nowadays all those Kevins suffer from the prejudice of not being too smart.

But I digress. I just hope that despite his name Gernot will be loved by both his keepers and visitors. After all, even the royal family has German roots. ;)
