The mothers are, in chronological order, Sheila, Kabinda and Inge. Apparently also the third baby is a male. I hope the EEP will not resume castrations (if they ever really stopped). But there is the rumour of a French zoo forming a new bachelor group soon, so maybe they are adopting the American approach to "surplus" males eventually...

Most of Asato's earlier offspring were female but things seem to be balancing out now. I'm wondering whether in situations like this with many young being produced, they shouldn't put a halt to it unless they know how to house all these young males in future.

Indeed!
(Just got confirmation that Inge's baby is a male, too. He was named Kiwano.)

Juju

Sad news indeed...this leaves the old female 'Baby Doll' as the only remaining survivor of the original founder group of Gorillas at Howletts ('Mushie' and 'Sidonie' are two more senior females but from a slightly later era).

Juju was mother of Howlett's first ever baby Gorilla-Kijo, born in 1975 and fathered by Kisoro. Despite being very young when she arrived at Howletts, and having no role model in the group, she reared him in exemplary fashion, whereas the other three females(BabyDoll, Mouila & Shamba) all had to have their earlier babies handraised.

Among her many descendants her grandson 'Kifu' is a group leader at Howletts, as also now is her great grandson (Kifu's son)'Ebeki'. Through her daughter 'Kaja' she is also represented in the Chessington group while one of her sons 'TamTam' has several offspring in St Martin la Plaine in France.

She was a wonderful gorilla mam. She contributed a lot to the way we now think about gorillas.

Zoo la Palmyre.

The young female 'Maisha' who came from Beauval to La Palmyre last autumn, and featured in their series of excellent introduction videos, has unfortunately died after prolonged treatment for a herpes infection. Two other young Gorillas at the zoo have recovered after treatment for a different condition. See the zoo's facebook for full details

She had "gorilla herpes" and a staphylococcus infection. I think that it is the latter that caused most problems and that finally killed her.

La Palmyre Birth

In contrast to the sad news above, La Palmyre report the birth of a male baby on January 20th to female 'Ybana'.

They report that Ybana is the mother, but the do NOT report that Nyuki is the sire!!!!!!

Woops. You are absolutely correct.:o So possibly that either means they aren't sure if it is him or the young 'Bangui' or they know(if he doesn't mate) that the young male is the father...

Considering that Bangui would have only been 5.5 years old at the time of conception, I am rather doubtful he would be the father.

Granted, stranger things have happened, but still...

He would certainly be borderline, if that. I think there have been a couple of six year old fathers though...The Zoo now says 'father not confirmed yet'.

I heard that Kyuki has never been seen mating, and Bangui has. So I guess that the latter is the sire, at his age he should be fertile. But time will tell, if they do a DNA test.

Given his background, it would not surprise me at all if Nyuki did not mate, hence my reaction at presuming that he was a father. Hopefully they will do a DNA test later on.

Either way Bangui should be moved on soon surely,as his half-sister Ya Sika is coming up to breeding age.
